Summary

  • Fans are debating whether Stu Macher is dead or alive in Scream 7, making it hard to predict the sequel's direction.
  • Matthew Lillard's positive comments about Scream 7 fuel speculation that Stu may still be alive in the upcoming movie.
  • Lillard's return as Stu could provide a shocking and unforgettable twist, adding humor to the storyline and surprising fans.

I'm interested in seeing Matthew Lillard in Five Nights At Freddy's 2, and I'm also thinking a lot about the actor's return as Stu Macher in Scream 7. I'm not the only fan who thought everyone saw the last of Stu Macher when Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) seemed to kill him by throwing a TV at him in the original 1996 film. But now that he's part of the sequel with other returning characters like Roman Bridger (Scott Foley), I'm sure there's a good reason why he's being included in what's sure to be an equally funny and creepy story.

While past Scream characters haven't returned from the dead, fans are debating whether Stu is dead or alive in Scream 7, and it's hard to know which way the sequel is going to go. After reading a recent interview with Lillard, I'm now convinced Stu could still be here, but I still hope that the storyline makes sense.

Scream 7 will have familiar elements like Ghostface, Sidney Prescott, and other legacy characters, but could it feature a big twist?

Matthew Lillard's Scream 7 Comments Make Me Wonder About Stu Macher's Fate

In an interview with Comingsoon.net.com, Matthew Lillard shared some interesting things about filming the horror sequel. He mentioned talking to Scream 7's director Kevin Williamson and said:

"I had a lot of questions for Kevin when he called. I’m excited, really ecstatic to be back. I hope fans are happy. I hope people are excited to see me."

The actor also answered a question about David Arquette's statement that his return was supposed to be a surprise and said the same thing was true for him. Lillard explained:

"I was definitely not supposed to be announced until the trailer."

Based on these comments, I think Stu Macher could still be alive. I've gone back and forth on this since hearing the news that Lillard would be back. I previously thought Stu would still be dead because it would be impractical and confusing to say he's been here this entire time. But, if Lillard had some queries for Williamson and was supposed to be revealed in the trailer, I'm leaning towards the idea that Stu is still here.

It would have been a huge surprise to watch the Scream 7 trailer and see Stu pop up out of nowhere. If the trailer showed Sidney Prescott having a vision of Stu or showed him in a flashback scene, that wouldn't be as thrilling and shocking as seeing him alive. I also think those storytelling elements would be best saved for the movie itself, not the trailer. I think that since the franchise has been around since the mid-90s, the intention behind the trailer will be to shock people and make them feel that Scream 7 is a must-watch. Since Stu is such a hilarious character, his reveal is likely going to be funny, smart, and unforgettable.

Stu is my pick for best Ghostface, and that alone makes it easy to want to see him alive again. While I'm still curious about how Stu's presence could be explained logically, I have faith that the Scream writers and Williamson figured it out. Maybe there is a reason why Stu has been lying low for so many years and why he decides that now is the time to show his face again. The movie's large cast could mean a few Ghostface, and I'm not sure that making Stu one of the villains would be the right move. But he must be angry at Sidney after losing his best friend, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). Hopefully, getting revenge on Sidney isn't Stu's only motive because that would be boring and expected. He definitely needs to have a few surprises up his sleeve.

Matthew Lillard Had Positive Things To Say About Scream 7

In the same interview, Matthew Lillard said acting alongside the other cast members on the set of Scream 7 was similar to being around "old friends" since Neve Campbell reprised her role of Sidney Campbell. Lillard said:

"I think fans are gonna be excited. It’s got that vibe of like old school Scream, and so I just think we’re all really hopeful that we’re building what the fans will love and appreciate."

It sounds like Lillard enjoyed his experience filming the slasher sequel, and it's exciting to anticipate his role. I'm likely not the only Scream fan who thinks it will be tough to wait until February 2026 to see how his story unfolds.
