Marvel Studios is finally bringing the mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Fans have been waiting for an X-Men live-action reboot and one insider claims that some actors were already being eyed to play the major characters.

In 2019, Marvel Studios acquired the rights to X-Men when The Walt Disney completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The deal gave Disney and Marvel Studios control over the Fox-owned Marvel properties, including X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President, announced at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con that they would introduce the mutants into the MCU. However, he didn't give an official title and release date for the anticipated X-Men reboot. Despite that, they were already slowly introducing some of the X-Men in the MCU films. Patrick Stewart's Professor X appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022 and Kelsey Grammer reprised his role as Beast in The Marvels in 2023. The pair along with Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and James Marsden (Cyclops) are also part of Avengers: Doomsday. However, new characters are expected to lead the MCU's X-Men reboot.

Marvel Producer Explains The Delay In X-Men Reboot After Disney Purchased The Rights

A Marvel producer shared why they didn’t rush to develop the X-Men reboot after Disney purchased the rights for the franchise.

Entertainment insider Jeff Sneider talked about MCU films on the latest episode of The Hot Mic. He specifically discussed the casting for the X-Men reboot and claimed some actors were already considered to play the three leads. Sneider claimed that Marvel wants a Black actor to play Professor X. He speculated that it was probably to distinguish it from the two previous stars who played the same character — Stewart and James McAvoy. He named Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man star Colman Domingo as the potential new Professor X. Sneider also added that there were rumors Denzel Washington could play Magneto. "It'd be interesting if they had a Black counterpart as Charles," he added, before noting that Domingo is high on the list compared to British actor and director David Oyelowo.

However, Sneider added that the name that stood out to him was the new actress rumored to play Jean Grey. "This was the latest name for Jean Grey — Daisy Edgar-Jones," the movie scooper said with a smile. Host John Rocha approved of Edgar-Jones for the role, saying it was the "best name" he had heard for the character in all the actresses rumored to play the coveted role in the X-Men reboot. He added that the Twisters actress would be perfect to portray an in-love Jean and a version of her who was stressed with her love triangle with Cyclops and Wolverine. Sneider agreed, saying "Daisy feels right" for the role. However, since these names are not officially cast, he warned fans to take the report with a grain of salt.

X-Men is one of the most anticipated projects in the MCU because it marks the return of the iconic mutants who are among the most beloved characters from Marvel Comics. Their arrival promises a fresh take that aligns with the broader MCU narrative. Although some of the X-Men OGs are joining the MCU, many are convinced that the characters will be recast in the reboot. The return of the original X-Men cast members and the introduction of new actors to portray the mutants are possible with the MCU's multiverse concept. There's no definite update about the casting, but there are rumors that the Thunderbolts* director, Jake Schreier, is being eyed to helm the film. It's not yet official, but it's likely to happen considering how successful his recent MCU project is.

MCU's X-Men is expected to be released in 2027.
