A playable demo for Mecha BREAK, the upcoming multiplayer third-person shooter from publisher/developer Amazing Seasun Games, has put up surprisingly high player numbers on Steam. But while Mecha BREAK's demo has been drawing in players in droves, not everyone seems to be enjoying their first taste of the game.
Though its developer isn't a household name, Amazing Seasun Games picked a good time to reveal Mecha BREAK at the viewership-record-breaking airing of The Game Awards 2023, which saw it reach more than 118 million different game enthusiasts. While it had to compete for attention with announcements of free God of War: Ragnarok DLC and five game revivals from Sega, the reveal trailer managed to turn some heads with its fast-paced gameplay, cool mechs, and intense-looking melee and gun-based combat.
Steam Giving Away Free Horror Game With 'Very Positive' Reviews
For a limited time, Steam users have the chance to add a free horror game with positive reviews to their collection.
While the game is set for full release sometime this spring, the Global Storm open beta for Mecha BREAK began on February 23, 2025, for both Xbox Series X|S and PC players. The demo available on Steam saw players quickly flock to try the game out, reaching a peak concurrent player count of more than 317,000 players at 2 p.m. UTC — about four hours after its launch — according to SteamDB's charts. While numbers have fallen since that time, the game had been occupying the number four slot on Steam's charts, landing it behind only Counter Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Dota 2, and placing it just ahead of NetEase Games' hit superhero shooter Marvel Rivals.
Mecha BREAK Demo Hits Big Player Numbers Early
The early numbers for the sharp-looking mech game are impressive, but they don't necessarily translate to instant success for Amazing Seasun Games. Four hours after the game hit its peak, numbers had dropped to around 87,000, and player reviews on the demo's Steam page are now mostly negative, with only 24 percent of the more than 2,500 reviewers giving their approval. While players are providing a wide variety of reasons for not having good early impressions of Mecha BREAK, two big issues seem to be at the forefront. The first is a tutorial that many players find painfully long yet still not very informative, with one player noting that the tutorial section and its pair of "compulsory AI-like matches" took nearly an hour to complete. The other is the game's use of Kernel Level anti-cheat software, which has earned a negative reputation among many members of the online gaming community for its ability to access a wide variety of files on a user's device.
Many players have also complained about bugs and sluggishness, but those who have left positive reviews have reminded other players that this is just a beta build of the game and the finished product will likely be a lot crisper and cleaner. One review from a player enjoying the mech game found it feels like the gameplay of Titanfall meets Armored Core, with a bit of the Gundam franchise thrown in for good measure.
