Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has a wide array of difficulty options for players to choose from. You can customize your Metal Gear Solid Delta experience in a surprising number of ways, modifying more than just enemy damage and health.

There's also a choice between Legacy and New Style controls, allowing you to experience the game as it was on the PlayStation 2 or check out MGS Delta's revamped third-person shooter control scheme. This choice also affects the game's difficulty, as the developers have taken into account the different camera perspectives.

All Metal Gear Solid Delta Difficulty Options

Metal Gear Solid Delta Difficulty Options

There are six difficulty options to choose from in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

  • Very Easy
  • Easy
  • Normal
  • Hard
  • Extreme
  • European Extreme

You can select any of the difficulty options except for European Extreme on your first run. European Extreme is only unlocked after completing the game for the first time. You can't change difficulty levels midway through MGS Delta, either, so choose carefully when starting a new game.

Difficulty Setting Differences in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

Very Easy gives Snake double HP and the EZ Gun, which is a silent tranquilizer pistol with unlimited ammo. You'll also be able to use the Motion Detector, Active Sonar, and Anti-Personnel Sensor to detect enemies more easily. Those enemies will have a much harder time detecting you, though, since Very Easy greatly reduces enemy attack power and awareness.

Easy is one step above, but it still weighs things in the player's favor. Snake gets 1.5x his normal life gauge, and enemies will have slower reaction times, reduced detection abilities, and lower overall attack power. You'll also be able to use the same equipment as Very Easy (Motion Detector, Active Sonar, and Anti-Personnel Sensor).

Normal is the intended experience for first-time players. Everything from Snake's HP to enemy damage output is set to the standard level, and you can still use the Motion Detector, Active Sonar, and Anti-Personnel Sensor. The highest title you can earn on Normal difficulty is Doberman.

Hard ramps things up in the enemies' favor. Snake has the standard amount of HP, but enemy attack power and detection abilities are increased. Guards will be able to see you from much farther away on Hard mode, so you'll need to master the camouflage mechanic to successfully sneak through the jungle. You can only use the Anti-Personnel Sensor on Hard mode, too, not the Motion Detector or Active Sonar. Hard mode runs are limited to the FOX title, too.

Extreme is the hardest starting difficulty available in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and it's really only recommended for people who are intimately familiar with the original game. Snake starts with 2/3 of his normal life gauge, and enemy soldiers have significantly increased awareness and damage output. You can't use any detection items on Extreme mode, either, not even the Anti-Personnel Sensor. If you perform well enough on Extreme difficulty, you can earn the FOXHOUND title.

European Extreme is only available after completing MGS Delta for the first time. It's the same as Extreme difficulty, except the game ends if you get spotted by an enemy. Caution phases don't count, though, so you can still eliminate guards and keep the enemy on their toes as long as you don't trigger a full alert. It's the ultimate Metal Gear challenge.

Differences Between MGS Delta's Play Styles (Legacy Vs New)

Metal Gear Solid Delta Play Styles

Metal Gear Solid Delta has two play styles to choose from: Legacy and New. The game defaults to New Style with revamped third-person controls, but you can opt for Legacy Style if you prefer the original control scheme from the PS2 version of Snake Eater.

These options change more than just the control scheme, however. New Style allows you to aim and shoot while on the move, and the over-the-shoulder perspective makes it much easier to spot distant enemies. Legacy Style has an overhead camera like the original game, and you have to stand in place to aim your weapons from a first-person perspective. Otherwise, you'll only be able to shoot from the hip at nearby enemies.

MGS Delta also takes your chosen play style into account when determining the overall difficulty level. Since the New Style offers more fluid shooting mechanics and a wider field of view, enemies will have faster reaction times and increased awareness to compensate for this. If you stick with Legacy Style, however, the game will be a bit more forgiving since the camera and shooting controls are more restricted.

You can change between Legacy Style and New Style at any time from the game's settings menu.

While you can't change difficulty levels after starting the game, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is intended to be replayed after you roll credits for the first time. Once you get more familiar with the jungle's layout, you can clear the game in roughly 10 hours. Try to ramp up the difficulty settings and earn some of the game's rarest titles on your second run. It'll help you prepare for the multiplayer Fox Hunt mode.
