Summary
- Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is likely to release in 2025.
- Previously, PlayStation said the game was coming in 2024.
- The delay to 2025 will see it face competition from games like Grand Theft Auto 6.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater now looks even more likely to release in 2025 than in 2024, judging by developer Konami's new announcement. Alongside the Silent Hill 2 remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater was expected to be the second major remake coming from the Japanese gaming giant this year.
Although it's been well over a year since Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater was announced, Konami is still mum about the game's targeted release window. Despite Sony marketing the remake of 2004's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater as one of the games coming to PlayStation in 2024 in January, the same was never acknowledged by the developer. All the official videos about the stealth-action title shared so far don't mention anything about its expected release date. However, new developments suggest that a 2024 launch for the highly anticipated game doesn't seem to be feasible anymore.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater still shows "TBD" (To Be Declared) as its release date in Konami's earnings call presentation for Q2 FY2025, highlighting that the company had no release window assigned for the game till as late as September. The Metal Gear franchise owner's statement in another financial results document simply states that its ongoing work for FY2025 includes "working diligently" on the Snake Eater remake to get it ready for launch, without delving any deeper. It's worth noting that Konami used this exact same statement in the last quarterly results from August 2024 as well, hinting that the project status may not have changed enough over the past few months to merit an update.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Could Join the Crowded 2025 Release Calendar
With Konami providing no information about a tentative release date, even as 2024 nears its end, it seems almost certain that the devs have moved on to eyeing 2025 for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater's launch. Previously, in Silent Hill 2's case, the Japan-based developer shared the survival-horror game's release date around the time of its Q1 earnings call even though the launch wasn't going to happen until the third quarter---in other words, Konami made the date public more than four months before launch day. Based on the amount of gap kept between the release date announcement and the launch itself, it is easy to figure out that there simply doesn't seem to be enough time to squeeze in the Snake Eater remake's launch into the 2024 calendar at this point.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater not coming out this year would mean fans missing out on playing the remake in the 20th anniversary year of the original. Since this would also apparently push the game into 2025, Konami would have to compete with other major games, like Assassin's Creed Shadows and GTA 6, for sales and award recognition. If the Snake Eater remake rolls out next year, it would be interesting to see how the first mainline Metal Gear title since 2018 holds up in a calendar year stacked with big releases.
