The Tournament For The Throne is the major backdrop for the events of Metaphor: ReFantazio, with the Protagonist going on a journey to win over the hearts of the people and potentially become king. Popularity is an actual in-game mechanic that the player can increase by doing certain tasks, increasing their rank and odds of becoming king.
Popularity mostly focuses on side content, and is not a mechanic players are forced to engage with. While some story actions throughout the game will naturally increase your rank, there are lots of other things that can be done for those racing for the top spot.

How To Increase Your Popularity Rank In Metaphor: ReFantazio
At the start of the game, the protagonist's rank will be somewhere beyond 8,000, but once the king's magic is enacted, you're able to increase your popularity. Completing many major story missions will increase your popularity, though this won't be enough to get you to the top spot and get your face on the top three stones in each city. Other things you can do to increase your popularity are:

Ranking up Royal Virtues won't directly increase your rank, though they will allow you to perform certain Royal Virtue tasks better and earn popularity by doing so. For example, the bungee jumping task in Martira requires Courage level 2 to successfully complete, and doing so will earn you popularity. Increase your Royal Virtues and complete Virtue tasks with free time in each city to get random boosts in popularity. |

What Does Popularity Do In Metaphor: ReFantazio
Despite common belief, your popularity ranking in the game won't influence which ending you get. Aside from that, increasing your popularity is a great way to get MAG. As your rank continues to increase, you can check in with the face rock in any city to get a MAG reward based on how many places your rank increased. The MAG from the statue can be collected as often or not as you'd like, as it stays stored in the rocks until you choose to interact with one.
The MAG reward is also shared among all rocks, meaning you can interact with any one to get the reward.
