Metaphor: ReFantazio has surpassed 2 million sales, Sega Sammy announced. While the figure marks a significant milestone for the game, it also indicates that Metaphor: ReFantazio's sales were heavily front-loaded and dropped off sharply following the game's debut.
Atlus's latest JRPG was released for PC and consoles on October 11, 2024. A day later, Sega announced that Metaphor: ReFantazio surpassed 1 million sales, making it Atlus's biggest launch to date.
During Sega's latest Management Meeting on June 18, the Japanese gaming giant revealed that Metaphor: ReFantazio managed to hit 2 million sales by the end of its fiscal year 2025, which concluded on March 31. While the game doubled its launch-day sales in the eight months following release, its performance was heavily front-loaded. The sales drop-off looks particularly stark relative to the publisher's broader catalog, which has so much staying power that Sega's older games are outselling new releases 4-to-1.
Sega's Confirmation of Metaphor: ReFantazio Passing 2 Million Sales
Metaphor: ReFantazio’s 1 million day-one sales initially put it ahead of Persona 5, which took a month to reach 1.5 million units globally. However, Persona 5 surpassed 2 million sales by November 2017, around two and a half months after launch. Poorly redacted figures from Sega’s latest management meeting summary indicate that Persona 5 Royal sold 1.75 million copies in fiscal year 2025—nearly matching Metaphor’s total sales during the same period. Despite this, Metaphor likely generated more revenue, being a new Sega release with a higher base price and fewer significant discounts during the observed period.
Although Metaphor: ReFantazio's first-day sales marked the biggest launch in Atlus's history, the sharp drop-off noted in Sega's latest commercial update suggests the game is unlikely to match the staying power of Persona 5, which is estimated to have sold around 10 million copies across all of its versions—the original, Royal, and the P5R remaster—as of mid-2025. Right now, the game's success appears to be in the ballpark of the Persona 5 Stirkers ARPG spin-off, which was previously confirmed to have sold 2 million copies as of November 2023, three and a half years following its release.
Metaphor: ReFantazio Devs Already Working on Their 3rd Game
Metaphor: ReFantazio was the first original project from Studio Zero, an internal Atlus team formed in 2016 and staffed by Persona series veterans, including Katsura Hashino, Shigenori Soejima, Yuichiro Tanaka, and Azusa Kido. The same team previously worked on Catherine: Full Body, an enhanced re-release of the 2011 puzzler Catherine, which launched in 2019. In an October 2024 interview, Studio Zero head Katsura Hashino confirmed that his department had already started working on its next project, albeit without sharing any specifics.
