Metro 2033 is a beloved survival shooter that offers an immersive look at post-apocalyptic Russia, and the enhanced Metro 2033 Redux makes the game even better. Metro 2033 Redux adds quite a few quality of life changes and reworks the campaign structure to make things flow more smoothly.
Metro 2033 was originally released in 2010 for Xbox 360 and PC, and Metro 2033 Redux hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC four years later in 2014 alongside an enhanced version of its sequel, Metro: Last Light Redux. The Redux versions of these games are essentially remasters at their core, but they change much more than just visuals.
Metro 2033 Redux: How Long To Beat
Metro 2033 Redux offers a remastered look at the 2010 classic, and players jumping in for the first time should know how long it'll take to beat.
Metro 2033 Redux Changes and Improvements
The most significant improvement to Metro 2033 Redux is its new engine. The game now runs on the engine of its sequel, Last Light, so several graphical changes, new mechanics, and other features have been ported over.
Because the game runs on Last Light's engine, players can now wipe their mask and perform takedowns in Metro 2033 Redux among other things. The game features more realistic weapon handling and more accurate firearm features. The game tracks if there is a round currently chambered when reloading guns, for example.
In addition, new difficulty modes are available to choose from. The fan-favorite Ranger mode is included in Metro 2033 Redux, offering a highly immersive experience with lethal tweaks to difficulty. Players can also choose between Spartan and Survival difficulty settings. The former makes the game more action-oriented and increases resource availablity as in Metro: Last Light, while the latter limits the player's supplies and slows the game down as in Metro 2033.
Metro 2033 Redux also makes multiple big changes to the campaign structure, combining individual levels into long stretches of gameplay without loading screens separating them. The story and missions are still the exact same as the original game, but everything flows more smoothly in Redux.
There are no new levels or areas in Metro 2033 Redux, but some new secrets have been added to the campaign that draw inspiration from Last Light. For example, Redux adds locked safes to some of Metro 2033' s missions. Players can find keys while scavenging that will open these safes and reward them with resources, ammunition, and supplies.
Ultimately, Metro 2033 Redux is an enhanced version of the original game that brings it more in line with the later entries in the Metro series. It's not quite up to the level of something like Metro: Exodus, but Metro 2033 Redux's fantastic atmosphere and streamlined campaign progression make it a memorable first-person shooter.
