Metroid fans have been just as lost waiting for new series updates, just as franchise protagonist Samus Aran often finds herself lost on derelict alien worlds. The Metroid franchise has always been a roller coaster of consistency ever since its inception, with several releases launching over a span of a few years, before a complete absence from the market for what seems like double the time. At E3 2017, it seemed like fortune was in the favor of fans, as both Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Prime 4 were announced during Nintendo's presentation.
Unfortunately, only the former game released and Metroid Prime 4 had to restart production in early 2019, with no updates provided since that time. In the absence of Metroid Prime 4 and in order to increase excitement, rumors have begun mounting that Nintendo is planning a Metroid Prime Trilogy release for Nintendo Switch. Although these rumblings have been making the rounds for a while with no official announcement from Nintendo, it only seems like a matter of time before gamers can relive this prime gaming experience on the go.
Rumors, Rumors Everywhere
First off, it's not as if fans are just tossing around the Metroid Prime Trilogy concept like it came out of nowhere, as it has been leaked and rumored countless times in recent years. With news stories dating back to 2018 when a Swedish retailer leaked Metroid Prime Trilogy, all the way until the present day, there must be some warranted fact to all of this speculation. If this idea had appeared once or twice, it may have been easy to simply shrug off as miscommunication behind the scenes or someone just trying to get attention with a wild claim.
However, this has not been the case as persistent whispers have been heard echoing throughout the industry that this collection is indeed happening at some point. There have even been rumors that the Metroid Prime Trilogy for Switch is complete, and Nintendo had to hold off on its launch due to development issues with Metroid Prime 4. All of this is to say that, for a rumor to appear so often over the span of a few years, with plenty of correlating information across reports, must mean there is some truth to all of this. Even if these reports weren't true, Nintendo had to have seen the unanimous support from the gaming community for this product, recognizing an opportunity to put it together.
Following a Pattern
Samus Aran of course isn't the only major mascot Nintendo has in its library. Mario has been gleefully hopping along for decades, just as Link has been adventuring through the vast and dangerous world of Hyrule. Since these respective Nintendo franchises have also been around for a long time, the number of installments in both the Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda have grown incredibly numerous. Naturally, to capitalize on this nostalgia and celebrate these series as a whole, Nintendo has made the effort to either release compilations of these classic games.
Skyward Sword is coming to Switch and a certain wacky plumber just celebrated his 30th anniversary with Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Even the aforementioned Metroid: Samus Returns was a 3DS remake of a Game Boy game, so Nintendo has been in this habit of this process long before the era of the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo is a big business and surely understands the value and importance of a Metroid Prime Trilogy for Switch.
