When The Sopranos debuted on HBO in 1999, it officially launched the golden era of television. It was a time when television featured three-dimensional characters and nuanced writing that didn't give the viewer all the answers. Two years later, HBO's next hit arrived in the form of a drama about a family of funeral directors in Los Angeles. Six Feet Under was peak TV, and it earned rave reviews from critics and fans alike, and it launched the career of Michael C. Hall, who would go on to play America's favorite serial killer in Dexter, for eight seasons between 2006-2013. For over a decade, Hall was rarely absent from television screens, but it's actually his role as David Fisher that deserves the accolades, while Dexter Morgan gets all the credit.
David Fisher was a complicated character who not only had to deal with the death of his father, Nathaniel Fisher, in the very first season, but he was also coming to terms with being gay. Hall nails every nuance of how uncomfortable the character feels in his own skin, but as the show progresses, David grows more confident, and for 63 episodes, Michael C. Hall portrayed a character who will live long in the audience's memories.

Dexter is widely considered to be part of the golden age of television, but towards the end of its original run, the cracks were starting to show. The Trinity Killer storyline in the fourth season is considered to be the high point of the series. However, by the time the final season arrived in 2013, Dexter Morgan's serial-killing adventures had officially 'jumped the shark'. However, Six Feet Under always maintained its high quality and ended long before it was ushered out the door. Dexter's finale is widely considered to be the worst in the history of television, but, in stark contrast, Six Feet Under's ending is arguably one of the best of all time. Both shows have strong themes surrounding death, but they couldn't be more different.
Dexter: New Blood supposedly provided fans with a definitive ending, but due to the success of the limited series and Showtime's merger with Paramount, Michael C. Hall's serial killer with a code will return in Dexter: Resurrection in July 2025, and it looks set to run for multiple seasons. The Dexter-verse will always have a complicated legacy due to its many missteps, but that can't be said for Six Feet Under, with its perfect ending, and strong five-season run. Dexter Morgan will always be the best-known character of Michael C. Hall's career, but David Fisher arguably had the better arc.
