Midnight Suns: All Wolverine Cards, Ranked

Marvel's Midnight Suns has been out for a while and here are all the Wolverine cards that it features.

By

The game has a ton to offer for comic book fans — especially fans of the X-Men. Players can also unlock tons of cosmetics in the game, including outfits, some for combat and other to wear around the Abbey. Not all of them are created equally, but many of them harbor major Easter Eggs for comic book fans. Wolverine follows this trend, but which Midnight Suns outfit for Wolverine is the best?

Ranking Criteria:

  • "Cool" Factor — is this something a superhero would wear?
  • Authenticity — is this something THIS superhero would wear?
  • Lore — does this outfit work within the scope of the lore for the game and/or comics?

12 Bonus Entry: Swimsuits

Would Wolverine Prefer To Be Au Naturale?

imaes of Midnight Suns Wolverine Swimsuits
  • Wolverine has more body hair than this, no?
  • No speedo option as with Deadpool

The swimsuits only really come into play when characters spend time in the hot tub or recuperate from battle. Many of them feel like afterthoughts for the characters, and that's definitely the vibe with Wolverine's options above.

Though the colors are on brand, that's about it. Swim trunks and swim briefs don't feel very authentic to Logan, but they serve a purpose in the game all the same, minor as it may be.

11 Book Club Wolverine

I Ain't A Nerd, Bub

  • Earned when Wolverine shows up to a Book Club meeting
  • Not as unique or in-character as other outfits

Let's be honest, Logan isn't much of a book guy; he says so himself in the game. Yet he joined the club all the same, so he gets the t-shirt unlock just like Blade, Captain Marvel, and Captain America. The rest of the outfit is a generic pair of jeans and boots. There's a bit of asset recycling in Midnight Suns as well , which doesn't help this outfit.

Marvel's Midnight Suns pits characters from Marvel Comics against each other — but which ones fight best together?

By

Even when not being compared to his other Abbey outfits, this one misses the mark on coolness, lore friendliness, and authenticity. Of course...in this case, that's kind of the point, isn't it?

10 Full Force Wolverine

Understated Doesn't Need To Be Boring, But This Is

images of Wolverine from Midnight Suns in combat and Full Force outfit
  • References Wolverine's time with X-Force with its grayscale color scheme
  • Feels a bit too "blah" even for someone as uninterested in fashion as Logan

Deadpool has a similar outfit to this one in Midnight Suns called "Xcessive Force" as a tribute to his participation in X-Force. However, also like Deadpool's, this outfit falls a bit short of hitting good marks of coolness, lore friendliness, and authenticity. Again — is a tight muscle shirt what Wolverine would pick to train or lounge in? Doubtful.

More than that, it's is the reused assets issue again. We see plain black pants and standard black boots. The only defining feature here that makes it "Wolverine" is the X logo and brittle reference to X-Force. It's fine, but that's about it.

9 Instructor Wolverine

A Builder Of Young Minds (With Claws)

images of Wolverine in Midnight Suns in his Instructor outfit and combat
  • A little bland with its original grayscale color scheme
  • Stands as a reminder of Wolverine's time at the Charles Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters

Logan might not admit it all the time, but he really loves mentoring young mutants. He has special moments in Midnight Suns where he specifically talks to The Hunter about Magik, and how much they have in common. Having an outfit in this theme is a neat homage, and reminder that Logan can be soft from time to time.

Of course, the specialness begins and ends right there; Logan probably wouldn't pick this outfit for himself. Additionally, it isn't very cool either. But hey, they can't all be winners.

8 Classic Wolverine (Abbey)

This Outfit Has Its Place, And It's In The Middle

image of Classic Abbey Wolverine in Midnight Suns next to Wolverine fighting Sabretooth
  • Plain black pants and a muscle shirt in classic colors does not a mind-blowing outfit make
  • Not a bad pick until players unlock better Abbey outfits

Wolverine has long been at odds with Sabretooth, a.k.a. Victor Creed (as seen above), who often worked with Magneto against the X-Men. The Classic Wolverine outfit in Midnight Suns echoes the yellow/blue color scheme of Logan's traditional outfit while fitting it into the muscle-shirt motifs in which every character in the game can partake.

The color scheme makes it more unique, but overall, the outfit is a bit underwhelming. It's a solid pick, but there are better ones that Logan would pick for himself. Also, why wear a belt and jeans with a workout shirt?

7 Long Road Wolverine

Get On Your Bikes And Ride, Bub

images of Wolverine in his Long Road and Midnight Suns outfits in Midnight Suns
  • Features a biker motif to reference the Wolverine Max story arc
  • Acts as a solid real-world option for Logan

Logan is a biker dude, so he's got to gear up properly. That mutant healing factor isn't something to take for granted, after all. Proper bike gear is essential when riding exposed on any kind of motorcycle, moped, or scooter. That means a nice leather coat and, preferably, protective pants and other gear like pads. A helmet is non-negotiable — even with Logan's hair.

This outfit more than likely references the "Long Road" story arc in Wolverine Max. Here, we see Logan trying to "turn his life around," eschewing his previously violent impulses and taking up more of a heroic mantle. It's not all capes and smiles, but what journey of self-discovery is?

6 Down Time Wolverine

A Concert Might Destroy Logan's Hearing Though

images of Wolverine in Midnight Suns in Down Time outfit and combat
  • Features a double blue color motif that doesn't feel very Logan
  • Includes a fun Easter Egg for eagle-eyed comic fans

This shirt is a neat little reference for comic fans, but might not land for casual fans who play Midnight Suns. Though Thor's Hammer is Mjolnir, a different Thor had another hammer: Lightbringer. Alison Blaire also fronted a band which she named Lightbringr — which is the text that appears on this shirt for Wolverine!

Baby blue doesn't feel very lore-appropriate or authentic for Logan though, but he'd probably rep Lightbringr all the same, just to support his fellow mutant.

5 "Logan" Wolverine

Mostly Just Referencing The Character And Not The Film

image of Wolverine in his Logan outfit and in combat in Midnight Suns
  • Acknowledges Wolverine's assumed persona
  • Lets players embrace their inner country boy

It's already been established that Wolverine rides hogs and veers a little country — not in the Toby Keith way, but in the Ron Swanson/Johnny Cash way. This outfit features a black tank top, a huge belt buckle, jeans, rustic boots, and a cowboy-adjacent hat. Hence why this outfit is simply called "Logan".

However, true fans know that Wolverine's true identity is not Logan; it's James Hewlett. After living so long and having to reinvent himself, Logan became his assumed persona. That adds another layer of interest to this outfit, boosting its solid scores for coolness, authenticity, and lore-friendliness.

4 Default Abbey Wolverine

Show Me The Real Logan...

  • Who knew a simple white tank top could have so much meaning?
  • Probably the most realistic outfit for Wolverine

Even if the player can't stand wearing the same clothes everyday, Logan probably would prefer it. No need to dedicate mental cycles to thinking about what to wear — it's taken care of, bub. Moreover, there's less to think about when getting a replacement if something rips or gets stained.

The default Wolverine outfit in Midnight Suns may be simple, but it isn't boring. That's because, for Wolverine, this scores very high on authenticity and lore-friendliness. The "cool" factor comes from the fact that it's Logan, and if someone says something mean about him or his outfit, he'll just pop out his claws and that'll be that.

3 Midnight Suns Wolverine

Welcome To The Party, Pal (We Have Jackets Custom Suits)

image of Wolverine in his Midnight Suns outfit
  • Features the same color motif as all Midnight Suns outfits
  • Acts as a fun addition to Wolverine's in-game closet

Completing Wolverine's character challenge nets the player his custom Midnight Suns outfit featuring black, white, gold, and glowing orange elements. It's a fine suit that incorporates body armor and intricate filigree into the design. Whether that body armor helps him in battle is unknown.

That said, the suit makes Wolverine almost as intimidating as he looks in his X-Force outfit. His voice actor, Steve Blum, captures a seemingly tired yet wiser Wolverine who wants to learn not to push people away. He's in his mentor phase, but the suit embodies the balance of gruff and vulnerable that the Midnight Suns version of Logan is.
