First announced in 2023, MindsEye is the forthcoming title from developer Build A Rocket Boy, with IO Interactive Partners attached to publish. MindsEye looks to have elements of a few widely popular and recognizable properties, like Cyberpunk 2077 and Grand Theft Auto, while setting up its own intriguing world and intricately woven story. Based on everything that has been shown off about it thus far, the title looks ready to take fans on a bombastic journey through a futuristic city, exploring themes of greed, AI, and identity.
MindsEye in fact has a closer relationship with GTA, as it is directed by the former president of Rockstar North. Leslie Benzies has an impressive resume from his time with the company and in the industry, and his vision for MindsEye looks to capitalize on his extensive experience and expertise, as well as it being part of Build A Rocket Boy's other, more experimental and ambitious platform.
MindsEye is scheduled to release on June 10, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
MindsEye Could Be the Perfect Game to Ease the Wait for GTA 6
Helmed by former Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies, Mindseye is looking like a unique cyberpunk twist on the iconic Grand Theft Auto formula.
Everything Known and Confirmed About MindsEye, So Far
MindsEye's Setting, Story, and Characters, Explained
MindsEye is described as "a richly detailed thriller with best-in-class cinematics and a thought-provoking story about when technology and ambition collide." Fans can look forward to it being:
A third-person single-player action-adventure set in the fictional near-future city of Redrock, where robots carry out manual tasks and an algorithm connects all-seeing devices to make it "The Safest City in the World." The city is an intense, super-heated, desert metropolis where technology is king. Redrock is a living experiment in the existential potential of man and machine.
The title will put players in the role of protagonist Jacob Diaz, a former special-ops soldier. Jacob is experiencing haunting visions and fragmented memories of a covert operation he was part of, caused by his titular MindsEye neural implant. As he searches for answers to his past and current condition, Jacob will navigate the tense political and societal landscape of Redrock, and rub elbows with two opposing but equally imposing figures.
MindsEye's dual antagonists are billionaire Marco Silva, and Redrock’s power-hungry mayor, Shiva Vega. Silva is bent on using his wealth and influence to "change the course of human evolution, whereas Vega desires greater control of the city's advanced technology and thus the lives of Redrock’s population." Fans will be able to fight on foot, in vehicles, and seemingly make use of drones in gameplay. The studio has said that MindsEye is a linear narrative with a runtime of roughly 15 hours, describing the world as "faux-pen" and likening it to the design of Mafia: Definitive Edition.
Jacob will be voiced by Alex Hernandez, who fans might recognize as Mafia 3's Lincoln Clay.
MindsEye Will Be Part of a Bigger Project
One other fascinating aspect about MindsEye is that it will be completely playable within Build A Rocket Boy's other project, Everywhere, a Metaverse-like experience where players will be able to access, create, and share content within the platform. The studio has also highlighted that MindsEye will be an episodic release for Everywhere, and that each episode will be set in "different time periods and parts of the universe," all connected through a greater narrative.
With Leslie Benzies at the helm and from the footage seen so far, MindsEye looks to feature a mix of Grand Theft Auto's explosive action while delving into the sci-fi dystopian and philosophical explorations of games like Deus Ex. And with it being contained within an entire other, grander platform, fans should keep a keen watch on MindsEye, as it promises to be an incredibly interesting and engaging title on multiple fronts.
