Minecraft Legends fans have received some bad news, as Mojang has announced that development on the action-adventure game has ceased. The news of the end of development comes less than a year after Minecraft Legends launched.

First announced at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcases in 2022, Minecraft Legends was subsequently released the following year on April 18, 2023. The Minecraft spin-off took the franchise in an RTS-inspired direction, giving players command over various mobs in the franchise. While the concept looked promising to some, the execution fell below expectations for many, with criticism directed at Minecraft Legends’ underwhelming AI and sometimes tedious gameplay. The news of Mojang ending support for Minecraft Legends came via a January 10 blog post that detailed a new Lost Legends update. According to the post, the developer plans “to take a step back from development.” Unfortunately, this means no new content, including Lost Legends and Marketplace DLC, will be coming to the game. However, the post noted that players can claim one more piece of free content, as the Bright-Eyed Hero skin is available in the Minecraft Legends Marketplace.

While the game is ending development, players did receive some new content to start 2024. In the same blog post, Mojang revealed Snow vs Snouts, a new Lost Legend. In addition, the game will continue to be playable with no functionality removed, according to the developer. As a result, players can still participate in PvP and co-op going forward.

Despite 3 million players checking out Minecraft Legends within the first couple of weeks of its launch, this end of development for the game does not come as a complete surprise. While matching the success of the original Minecraft would be nearly impossible, Minecraft Legends has faced some criticism and challenges post-launch, with the title having only a mixed review average on Steam. Over the past nine months, the developers have attempted to improve the gameplay experience. However, these updates were not enough to keep the game in active development past its first birthday.

It is worth noting that this news comes only a few months after development support on Minecraft Dungeons ended. Like Minecraft Legends, the game was another spin-off of the incredibly popular original Minecraft. In Minecraft Legends, you play as the hero! You might think that means you’ll be doing all the fighting, but actually: you’ll be doing all the leading. In Legends you’re not the only fighter, and in fact, your allies are better equipped to deal with the piglins than you are. Your task is to summon new friends and lead them in battle to defeat the rampaging piglins. You will have to defend villages, destroy piglin bases, and more to push back the piglins’ Nether corruption. Different allies have different strengths and weaknesses, which when used wisely can give you the edge in battle. In true Minecraft fashion, you must also make sure that you don’t run out of resources, so that you can keep spawning allies and building defensive or offensive structures. Exploring the Overworld is also important: it’s how you meet new friends and discover new resources, and even treasure! Plus, you’ll get to experience a new Overworld each time you play through the campaign, because every playthrough generates a unique map.
