Summary
- Minecraft on PlayStation VR will no longer be supported after March 2025.
- Players can continue playing in already-created worlds without the headset.
- Fans hope the game will receive PlayStation VR 2 support.
Minecraft fans on PlayStation will lose the ability to play on PlayStation VR headsets early next year. While the option of playing Minecraft using the head-mounted peripheral device has been available to fans for about four years, publisher/developer Mojang Studios plans to end its support following an update scheduled for March 2025.
Mojang first gave PlayStation 4 owners the option to play Minecraft using the PlayStation VR in September 2020. The update that added virtual reality support to the game came with a number of features specific to PlayStationn VR users to help them refine their immersive experience.
Minecraft Releases Big New Bedrock Update for September 2024
Minecraft releases a major update for Bedrock players adding in some new experimental features and fixing a handful of bugs throughout the game.
The announcement about the end of the game's run on PlayStation VR came as part of a Minecraft weekly changelog posted to the game's official website. The section detailing the end of PS VR support doesn't give a reason behind the change, but it states that the game's time on the device is limited and Minecraft updates that arrive after March 2025 will no longer support the device, meaning playing Minecraft on PlayStation VR will no longer be possible after the following update releases. However, players who have been playing using the peripheral will be able to continue playing in their previously created worlds on their PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles and will not lose access to tokens or other items they've purchased in the game's Marketplace.
Minecraft Won't Be Playable on PlayStation VR after March 2025
Even with the removal of the PlayStation VR support, there may still be some hope for players who prefer the virtual reality experience when playing Minecraft. Unlike some other independently operating virtual reality headsets, the PlayStation VR needs to be connected to a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 console in order to function. Sony also rolled out the PlayStation VR 2 in early 2023, though that device is not backwards-compatible with the original PlayStation VR, so games that work on one device won't work on the other. Minecraft has yet to be announced as a PlayStation VR 2 title despite evidence from online forums like Reddit that there is plenty of demand. Still, some fans seem doubtful that this will happen, as Mojang is owned by Sony competitor Microsoft.
Just a day ago, Mojang announced that Minecraft Live 2024 will be held on September 28. The annual online special presentation usually provides plenty of information about what players can expect to see coming to Minecraft over the course of the next year, so more information about the game's future with virtual reality on PlayStation may be revealed at that time.

Minecraft is a game made up of blocks, creatures, and community. You can survive the night or build a work of art – the choice is all yours. But if the thought of exploring a vast new world all on your own feels overwhelming, then fear not!
Minecraft has no set goal and can be played however you’d like! This is why it’s sometimes called a “sandbox game” – there are lots of things for you to do, and lots of ways that you can play. If you like being creative, then you can use the blocks to build things from your imagination. If you’re feeling brave, you can explore the world and face daring challenges. Blocks can be broken, crafted, placed to reshape the landscape, or used to build fantastical creations.
Creatures can be battled or befriended, depending on how you play. The world of Minecraft allows for epic adventures, quiet meditations, and everything in between. You can even share your creations with other players, or play in community worlds!
