Anyone who has a fear of spiders may want to avoid the work of this modder who decided that the eight-legged creatures in Minecraft were not as creepy as they could be and decided to rectify that. Known for being a game suitable for children, Mojang's sandbox title is about as family-friendly as anything could be. Its bright and simple graphics, relaxing music, and the potential for creativity are what set it apart from other AAA releases, particularly those that focus on action and violence.

However, it's not without its more intense moments. Minecraft does have some pretty scary mobs, after all. From the Enderman to the Wither, some of the creatures can send a chill down the player's spine. They may be blocky, but they offer something almost akin to horror in what is otherwise a relaxing game. However, there is another mob that one person has deemed pretty unremarkable in terms of scare factor and decided to do something about it.

In a recent video from SystemZee, the YouTuber decided to mod Minecraft to make the spiders way scarier than they are in the vanilla experience. This came in three forms. The first was an arachnid that was hidden inside a chest. When opened, it would burst open and begin chasing the player around, not too dissimilar to the mimics from Dark Souls. Then there was the cave filled with tiny spider eggs which, when they exploded, unleashed hundreds of the tiny creepy-crawlies on unsuspecting victims. However, the eight-legged coup de grace was in the form of an enormous spider, which emerged from a sandpit and not only attacked the player, but wrapped them in a cocoon ready to devour them.

This really gives these creatures a more terrifying edge, and the mod itself is a far cry from what SystemZee has done in the past. For example, last year the YouTuber modded Minecraft to give it realistic physics, which allowed them to play a game of Jenga. They've also been known to use AI to implement generated ideas into the game. But turning spiders into horrifying creatures is something else entirely.

With Mojang about to release Minecraft 1.2, this behemoth of a game is continuing to make an impact on the industry. It's probably the most famous rags-to-riches story in all of gaming, and with people like SystemZee able to tweak the formula to their own ends, there's a good chance Minecraft will continue to be as popular as it has been for a long time to come.

Minecraft is available on Mobile, PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
