Minecraft has launched a preview of its PlayStation 5 port, available for those who own the PlayStation 4 version of the game. Despite being a 13-year-old game, Minecraft remains a highly requested title on PlayStation 5, with fans eager to experience the best performance possible on their current-gen consoles. This dream is now close to reality, as Minecraft for PS5 is almost here.

Following its initial release in 2011, Minecraft was quickly ported to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2014. Despite the PlayStation 5 being on the market for over four years, Mojang has faced challenges in releasing a native version for the console. Fortunately, following Minecraft’s major update in June, the company announced that it was finally preparing to bring its sandbox game to Sony’s flagship console. As the first step, the devs are initiating an early-access period to gather player feedback.

On June 20, a preview of Minecraft for PlayStation 5 was launched, available to those who own the PlayStation 4 version. This news follows rumors from March about a potential PS5 port for Minecraft, confirming that Mojang has been hard at work on a native version for some time. To download the update, players need to go to the game settings and select the “Preview” option. Mojang has not yet confirmed the global launch date or pricing for the final version of the port, but it looks like PS5 players can expect to play a more polished Minecraft fairly soon.

What To Expect From Minecraft’s PS5 Port During The Preview Phase

Minecraft on PS5 will include the latest Tricky Trials update and crossplay for Realms subscribers. Following significant changes to Minecraft’s Realms earlier this year, Mojang requires a subscription for preview players to join servers with players on other platforms, with the lowest tier priced at $3.99 per month and the highest tier costing $7.99 per month. This controversial move may indicate Mojang's plans to monetize the PS5 port. Previously, fans requested a free PS5 upgrade for those who already own the game on PS4, but this seems unlikely given that some features are already behind a paywall.

Regarding the preview’s performance, Mojang aims to identify bugs and further optimize the game for PlayStation 5. Players should anticipate minor performance issues during the testing phase. Additionally, due to the port's beta status, the game's store will not be accessible on PS5. However, the preview includes native 4K support from the start. Minecraft on Xbox Series X added 4K support in a December 2023 update.

Minecraft is a game made up of blocks, creatures, and community. You can survive the night or build a work of art – the choice is all yours. But if the thought of exploring a vast new world all on your own feels overwhelming, then fear not!

Minecraft has no set goal and can be played however you’d like! This is why it’s sometimes called a “sandbox game” – there are lots of things for you to do, and lots of ways that you can play. If you like being creative, then you can use the blocks to build things from your imagination. If you’re feeling brave, you can explore the world and face daring challenges. Blocks can be broken, crafted, placed to reshape the landscape, or used to build fantastical creations.

Creatures can be battled or befriended, depending on how you play. The world of Minecraft allows for epic adventures, quiet meditations, and everything in between. You can even share your creations with other players, or play in community worlds!
