There's a new batch of SpongeBob content coming to Minecraft. Minecraft has come a long way from what it once was over a decade ago, and that includes the quality and scope of content that updates bring to the game. Back in 2011, it may have been difficult to imagine a game like Minecraft collaborating with some of the most well known television brands around, but now, the game has such large appeal that something like this can be expected.
The previous Minecraft and SpongeBob collaboration was released in 2022. In that DLC, players were given the ability to explore Bikini Bottom locations recreated in the game, and do a line of quests for show characters. In addition, players were given an array of skins that allowed them to dress up as their favorite SpongeBob characters. Mojang and Nickelodeon seemd to put plenty of effort into making the pack as on-theme as possible, and its popularity seems to have left the door open for further collaboration.
Minecraft Player Creates Every European Country’s Tallest Building in the Game
A Minecraft player creates impressive replicas of some of the tallest buildings in Europe, revealing what they would look like in the blocky game.
The new SpongeBob collaboration comes in the form of an add-on that will release on August 20. This SpongeBob add-on will include jellyfish-catching, fighting against Plankton, Doodlebob, and The Flying Dutchman, and "investigating the disappearance of a certain snail" implied to be SpongeBob's pet, Gary. Add-ons were introduced to Minecraft in February 2024, giving players the ability to further customize the look and behavior of the game. Add-ons are similar to mods for Minecraft but seem to have an increased ease of access because they are created and tested by the game's official developers. They are also available to console users.
Minecraft Announces SpongeBob Add-On
As players make their way through the quests that come with the SpongeBob add-on, they'll get more blueprints for Bikini Bottom buildings, along with new blocks and furniture to let Minecraft players enjoy designing new places. To celebrate the announcement of this DLC, a new "Imaginaaaation" Character Creator item has also been announced. The item is a rainbow headpiece, referencing a popular scene from the show that's inspired plenty of memes, and the character model used to show it off is mimicking SpongeBob's pose from the iconic scene. It is unknown whether the pose comes with the item, or if it's just meant to be a quirk of the announcement.
It will be interesting to see what other collaborations happen for Minecraft in the future, as it remains a massive brand. One of the biggest announcements for Minecraft for the year was that its Netflix series had begun production. As for the game, Minecraft fans will have to just wait and see what comes next.
