Minecraft is crossing over with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, just in time for the beloved Heroes in a Half-Shell to return to the big screen later this month. Minecraft is no stranger to colorful crossovers with famous properties, with several licensed DLC texture packs being released over the years that feature characters and worlds from Sonic the Hedgehog, Jurassic Park, and Toy Story just to name a few.

Meanwhile, the pizza-loving, crime-fighting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a long and storied history with gaming, with numerous titles being released during the various eras of the franchise. In recent years, the Turtles have seen a return to their arcade-style beat-em-up roots in 2022’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, which is about to get a DLC expansion later this year. A darker triple-A game based on The Last Ronin was announced back in March, and it is said to draw inspiration from Sony Santa Monica’s recent God of War titles.

In the meantime, the Turtles are making their way to Minecraft in a colorful DLC texture pack that is now available to purchase and download. A trailer for this zany crossover was posted on the official Minecraft YouTube account, featuring the Turtles in action as they explore Minecraft-built environments like New York City and the Turtles’ Lair to the classic TMNT cartoon theme of the 80s. Additionally, players will be able to battle iconic enemies like Shredder and Krang and customize their avatars with 20 TMNT character skins.

This shell-shocking new Minecraft content is arriving just as the Turtles are jumping back onto the big screen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, a new animated film that sees the brothers present themselves to the outside world - and save it from an army of mutants in the process. To promote the movie, Microsoft is currently offering players limited-edition, pizza-scented TMNT Xbox Series X/S controllers as a prize for its latest online contest.

With Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo now back in the public spotlight, the timing of this new Minecraft crossover couldn’t be better. Mojang’s block-building, survival sandbox title is still going strong after 12 years, and having the Turtles as playable characters will certainly draw in more players ahead of Mutant Mayhem’s release later this week. The colorful character designs from the 1980s TMNT cartoon also lend themselves well to Minecraft's blocky aesthetic, and it will certainly be interesting to see what players come up with using this newly-released texture pack.

Minecraft is available on multiple platforms, including PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Android and iOS devices.
