Mojang has finally revealed the official name for Minecraft's Update 1.21: Tricky Trials. Slated to arrive in June 2024, Tricky Trials will be bringing a lot of new features to Minecraft, including a new weapon, trials, crafting objects, and more.

Players and modders are loving the newest Minecraft update, Update 1.205, which only released a few days ago. Titled Armored Paws, that update introduced an armadillo critter, eight new wolf skin designs, and the ability to craft wolf armor from armadillo scutes. Still not one to rest on its laurels, Mojang is already plowing ahead with information on the next update.

The big name reveal for the next update came as part of an official Minecraft Monthly video released on April 26, where it was unveiled by Vanilla Minecraft game director Agnes Larrson (at the video's 5:13 mark), although host and Mojang chief content officer Vu Bui offered several comedic near-reveals leading up to the official announcement. According to Larrson, the "Trials" part of the name references the adventures that players will be experiencing through the different types of challenges coming to the game in June, such as Minecraft's new Ominous Trials. Meanwhile, the "Tricky" portion of the name comes in two parts, addressing the challengingly fun aspects of the new game features and the new objects that will allow players to tinker around in different ways. "'Tricky' really feels like this quirky Minecraft personality, and that is something we like a lot, of course," she explained.

While Mojang is typically no slouch when it comes to releasing new content, the Tricks and Trials update will bring a wide variety of new content to the game. Minecraft's Ominous Trials are already available to try out in multiple ways (Bedrock Beta, Preview, and Java Snapshot) but will be making their way into the game officially with Tricks and Trials. These challenging fights occur in Trial Chambers and, although players will have to face some very tough mobs there, they will also be rewarded with potions for completing the trials.

Another highly anticipated feature is the overpowered Mace weapon coming to Minecraft. The Minecraft Monthly shared more information on this item as well, stating that its damage output will be proportional to the height from which players jump from onto enemies while wielding it. However, there is a catch, because if players miss their target while attacking, they will suffer the normal amount of damage that a fall from that height would usually dish out.

Minecraft is a game made up of blocks, creatures, and community. You can survive the night or build a work of art – the choice is all yours. But if the thought of exploring a vast new world all on your own feels overwhelming, then fear not!

Minecraft has no set goal and can be played however you’d like! This is why it’s sometimes called a “sandbox game” – there are lots of things for you to do, and lots of ways that you can play. If you like being creative, then you can use the blocks to build things from your imagination. If you’re feeling brave, you can explore the world and face daring challenges. Blocks can be broken, crafted, placed to reshape the landscape, or used to build fantastical creations.

Creatures can be battled or befriended, depending on how you play. The world of Minecraft allows for epic adventures, quiet meditations, and everything in between. You can even share your creations with other players, or play in community worlds!
