The ESRB has officially rated an Xbox Series X version of Minecraft, suggesting the hugely popular game could be getting a native release on Microsoft's current-generation console. Minecraft has been an incredible success since the game first launched over a decade ago, becoming one of the most popular and best-selling video games of all time.

Mojang continues to support Minecraft with new updates. Sometimes these updates fix bugs or address technical problems, but other times they add more substantial content. Minecraft's popularity is showing no signs of slowing down either, and it seems the game may be getting a big upgrade sooner rather than later.

The ESRB has officially rated Minecraft for Xbox Series X, which suggests that the game is about to be ported to current-generation consoles. This isn't the first time that evidence of a big Minecraft upgrade cropped up, and while it has yet to be officially announced, where there's smoke, there's fire. ESRB rating leaks like this tend to happen when a game is near-release, so one has to imagine that the Minecraft Xbox Series X port will be happening soon. It's possible that it will be accompanied by a PS5 version as well, which would make sense as Minecraft has continued to release on PlayStation platforms long after Microsoft acquired the rights to the IP.

What's unclear is if this new version of Minecraft will have any new bells and whistles that make it worthwhile on Xbox Series X. As it stands, Minecraft is technically playable on both PS5 and Xbox Series X through backward compatibility, but that's the older version of the game. A new version of Minecraft could potentially take advantage of the beefier hardware to implement things like ray-tracing and other features, but it remains to be seen if that will happen or not. It's entirely possible that the Xbox Series X version of Minecraft will be a straight port, assuming it exists at all, of course.

As it stands, Minecraft has been released on nearly every gaming platform imaginable, so it's only natural for the game to come to the newer consoles. Whenever it does, fans can count on the new version of Minecraft to be playable through the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on day one, as Microsoft owns the rights to the hugely popular IP.

Minecraft is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and legacy platforms.
