Camo Challenges have become part of Call of Duty since the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Ever since then, players have spent countless hours trying to obtain every Mastery Camo in every COD game, regardless of how difficult they may be. And while these Mastery Camos don't offer any "buffs," they give Modern Warfare 2 players bragging rights since some challenges require real skill to complete (like the launcher and melee challenges).

And now, with the newly revamped Gunsmith in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, players can expect to have to complete a whole new set of Camo challenges. But since the new Gunsmith features weapon variants instead of the traditional weapons, some players may be lost when it comes to Mastery Camos. That's why this guide will break down the requirements for every Mastery Camo so that players can get their hands on the elusive Orion Camo.

Base Camos

Every primary customizable Gunsmith weapon (weapons with attachments, like SMGs, Sniper Rifles, etc.) Will have four Camo Challenges:

  • First Camo Challenge: Get x number of kills.
  • Second Camo Challenge: Get x number of kills without reloading.
  • Third Camo Challenge: Get x number of Double Kills.
  • Fourth Camo Challenge: Get x number of Triple Kills.

Non-customizable Gunsmith weapons (launchers, melee, etc.) Will only require the first or second Camo Challenge to unlock the Base Camo. Once a player obtains all the Base Mastery Camos for a specific gun, it'll unlock the Gold Camo Challenges for that weapon.

Gold Camos

Unlike previous titles, Gold Camo Challenges will be the same for all weapons, but the number of kills without dying may vary from weapon to weapon

  • Get x number of kills without dying x amount of times.

Once the player completes the Gold Camo Challenge, they'll unlock the Gold Camo for that weapon. Some game modes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, like Team Deathmatch and Hardpoint, will make this camo challenge much easier to complete.

But, to move onto the Platinum Mastery Challenges, players must complete a minimum number of Gold Camo Challenges in a specific weapon category.

Platinum Camo

The minimum number of Gold Camo Challenges hasn't been officially released. But going by previous COD entries, players should expect to have to complete at least 5 Gold Camos within a weapon category. As for Platinum Camo Challenges, no requirements have been released, but Infinity Ward has mentioned they will be the same for all weapons.

In total, there are nine weapon categories:

  • Assault Rifles
  • Battle Rifles
  • SMGs
  • LMGs
  • Marksman Rifles
  • Sniper Rifles
  • Sidearms
  • Launchers
  • Melee (Primary and Secondary)

Once players obtain 51 Platinum Camos across different weapon categories, they'll unlock the Polyatomic Camo. But, for a gun to unlock the Polyatomic Camo, it has to have all previous Camo Masteries (Base, Gold, and Platinum).

Polyatomic Camo

Every weapon will have a different Polyatomic Camo Challenge, meaning the M4 Assault Rifle will have a different challenge than the AK47 Assualt Rifle, regardless if they are in the same weapon category.

The Polyatomic Camo Challenges will be the ultimate test for Call of Duty players, meaning the challenges will be anything but easy. Once players unlock 51 Polyatomic Camos, they can use the Ultimate Mastery Camo: Orion.

Orion Camo

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Orion Camo

Once a player unlocks a Polyatomic Camo on a weapon, they'll be able to automatically equip the Orion Camo without needing to complete any additional Camo Challenge. But the journey isn't over since unlocking the Orion Camo opens up a new set of tasks: Weapon Camo Mastery Challenges.

Weapon Camo Mastery Challenges

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Camo Mastery

Players can complete Camo-specific challenges that unlock emblems, calling cards, and weapon charms after unlocking the Orion Camo on a weapon. While the complete list of challenges hasn't been released, Infinity Ward did share an example of them:

  • Gold Mastery Challenge: Get 100 kills with the Gold Camo equipped.
  • Platinum Mastery Challenge: Get 200 kills with the Platinum Camo equipped.
  • Polyatomic Mastery Challenge: Get 300 kills with the Polyatomic Camo equipped.
  • Orion Mastery Challenge: Get 400 kills with the Orion Camo equipped.

Hopefully, this remains the same, but players shouldn't be surprised if they add more complex challenges like "killing x number of armored enemies" (which are among the toughest enemies in Modern Warfare 2).

Each Camo Mastery Challenge unlocks a unique reward, and once the player completes all four challenges, they'll be rewarded with a Weapon Charm.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
