Aetherium Crystals and tools are Schematic items that, once consumed, upgrade the Rarity and Pack-a-Punch level of a weapon. However, the upgrade level varies depending on the type of Aetherium a player uses and the rarity of the crystal. For instance, the rarer an Aetherium crystal is, the higher the upgrade level. The same case applies to the rarity of a weapon - a rare crystal will increase the damage range of a weapon further.

How to Get Aetherium Crystals and Tools in MW3

There are several ways to get Aetherium Crystals and tools in Modern Warfare 3, including:

Completing contracts to get Reward Rifts locations and looting them for crystals
Opening loot caches on the map
Destroying Harvester Orbs, so they drop Aether tools
Unlocking Aether Schematics to craft the tools

Completing certain missions also rewards players with Aetherium Tools. For example, players who complete the Infiltrator mission in Act 1 Tier 4 get the Raw Aetherium Crystal as a reward. Similarly, the Guardian Angel mission in Act 2 rewards players with the Epic Aether Tool.
