A petition to allow the release of a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 mod for 2016's Modern Warfare Remastered, known officially as H2M, has surpassed 6,000 signatures in just a single day. The team behind the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 mod was gearing up for a release on August 16 before Activision intervened and ordered its immediate shutdown.
The H2M mod was one that the Call of Duty community was eagerly anticipating, even causing Modern Warfare Remastered's player count to surge on Steam as fans prepared for the mod's release. After Activision failed to release a remastered multiplayer mode with the launch of 2020's Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, a group of die-hard fans set out to develop a mod using Modern Warfare Remastered, adding new weapons, maps, and more from the original Modern Warfare 2. While the mod would operate inside Modern Warfare Remastered, the aim was to give players a remastered version of the original Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer.
Rumor: Modern Warfare 4 Development Is in Serious Trouble
New information from a prominent Call of Duty leaker suggests that the next entry in the Modern Warfare series is in serious development trouble.
It was believed by the H2M team that Activision would not shut down the project due to it still requiring players to own an officially licensed copy of Modern Warfare Remastered. However, just hours before the mod was due for release, the studio issued a cease and desist and shut the Modern Warfare 2 mod down. As a result, the Call of Duty community has kicked off a petition on change.org known as "Let H2M-Mod Live in Peace." In less than 24 hours, the petition has received almost 6,500 signatures from players who demand Activision allow the mod to be released to the public.
Petition Wants H2M Mod Revived
The petition's description states that Activision should follow in the footsteps of Rockstar Games after the studio acquired the prominent Grand Theft Auto Online roleplay mod, FiveM, in 2023. It also notes that Activision should "thank" the H2M team for assisting in the revival of Modern Warfare 2 Remastered on Steam. Although the community will never know the exact figures, many believe Activision to have had a healthy cash flow increase as the shooter suddenly became one of the top sellers on Steam in August.
But the real goal of the petition is to get Activision to reverse its cease and desist and allow H2M to release the mod for Modern Warfare Remastered. Unfortunately, given that the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is right around the corner, the studio likely wants to have all potential players invested in the latest entry in the series, as opposed to the one that was launched almost a decade ago. But with the petition already being signed by thousands of fans and Modern Warfare Remastered being review bombed on Steam, there's a chance that Activision will at least acknowledge the situation.
