Monopoly: Pokemon Edition is available now, giving Pokemon fans a new board game to check out. Monopoly is already one of the most well-known board games, and this new Pokemon edition looks to put an exciting spin on the rules to keep things interesting for franchise fans.

As one of the most popular media franchises in the world, Pokemon has grown massively since its initial conception in the 1990s. What started with the first generation of Pokemon games has expanded to other areas, including merchandise. While fans can choose from nine generations of mainline video games and spin-offs, various physical games have also been released, with yet another option recently hitting stores.

The first generation had some hard to find Pokemon. Players were lucky to run into these back in the day.

Monopoly: Pokemon Edition is now available to purchase, having officially been released at the end of 2024 on December 20. This new version of the game, which can be played by two to four players, retains some aspects of classic Monopoly while also giving everything a Pokemon-themed makeover. For example, the spaces on the board are inspired by locations from the series, including Pokemon Gyms and stadiums. Monopoly: Pokemon Edition also features mover pieces for Gen 9 starters Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, along with the iconic Pikachu.

Monopoly: Pokemon Edition Puts a Different Spin on the Classic Board Game

In addition to the board design being Pokemon-themed, the rules have received a twist inspired by the franchise. Monopoly Money has been replaced with Poke Balls, and players can search locations for Pokemon. According to Hasbro, there are 48 pocket monsters to catch in the game, with players able to battle other Trainers and trade Pokemon at certain times. In Monopoly: Pokemon Edition, players win the game by completing their tracker mat, which requires collecting eight types of Pokemon. Alternatively, being the last person to have any Poke Balls left will grant victory. The board game is currently available for $24.99 from various retailers, including Amazon.

It is worth pointing out that this is not the first official Pokemon-themed Monopoly game to be released. Kanto and Johto editions of Monopoly were released in 2014 and 2016, respectively. In addition to Pokemon, Monopoly has featured numerous themed versions based on many other popular media franchises, including Hello Kitty, SpongeBob SquarePants, Star Wars, Dune, and many more.

It is doubtlessly exciting for fans to have a new Pokemon-themed Monopoly game available to play. The previous Kanto and Johto editions have become difficult to find, often requiring those interested to pay a steep markup. With only a $24.99 price tag for Monopoly: Pokemon Edition, this new version of the board game is relatively cheap, making it not a huge investment for fans. As 2025 gets into high gear, it will be interesting to see what else is coming from the Pokemon franchise regarding official merchandise.
