Summary

  • The Monster Hunter Stories remake for Switch won't include 3DS-exclusive Legend of Zelda DLC, disappointing some fans.
  • The game, originally a top-seller in Japan, features turn-based battles instead of real-time fighting like other titles.
  • Full voice acting, improved visuals, and a Museum mode with art and music will be available in the remastered versions.

The upcoming Monster Hunter Stories remake will not include Nintendo 3DS-exclusive content on the Switch. While Monster Hunter Stories is being marketed as the ultimate version of the popular game, the 3DS-exclusive Legend of Zelda DLC will remain available only for players who originally purchased it on Nintendo’s handheld.

Monster Hunter Stories was originally released for Nintendo 3DS in 2016 as a spin-off of the popular RPG series, with ports for Android and iOS coming out around one year after that. The game was successful, becoming the top-selling title in Japan in the week when it was released, and spawning a sequel called Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. Earlier this year, it was announced that both Monster Hunter Stories games would receive remakes for Switch, PS4, and PC.

Every Monster in Monster Hunter Stories Explained

The announcement of Monster Hunter Stories' port to PC and modern consoles makes it due for an overview of its roster of series monsters.

Now, the Monster Hunter Stories producer Yoshihiro Akira has revealed in an interview with Nintendo Life that “collaboration content from outside of Capcom” will not be available in this new release. This means that the popular Legend of Zelda collaboration in Monster Hunter Stories will continue to be exclusive to the 3DS release. With this DLC, players could wear Link’s green tunic, get an Epona monstie, and the Majora’s Mask for Navirou. As the 3DS eShop is currently not working anymore, it’s impossible for players who never purchased the DLC to acquire this content right now.

Monster Hunter Stories Will Not Have Nintendo 3DS-Exclusive Content on Switch

Despite not being mainline installments in the franchise, the two Monster Hunter Stories are often considered among the best Monster Hunter games by its fanbase. In this spin-off series, players fight in traditional turn-based battles instead of in real-time, making it quite a different experience from Monster Hunter World, for example, which has fights with colossal creatures that require timing and preparation. The new Monster Hunter Stories remasters will come with full voice acting in English and Japanese, improved visual fidelity, options for playing in high definition, and a Museum mode in which gamers will be able to view over 20 pieces of game art, illustrations, and music.

Fortunately for fans of the spin-off, Monster Hunter Stories 2 will also get a remake. The second title is known due to its higher difficulty levels, improved visuals, and a more serious story than its predecessor. Monster Hunter Stories 2 was the favorite of many fans, who saw it as an improvement over the first one. However, it still maintains fairly similar gameplay. Both games will be available soon, with the first coming out on June 14, and the second on July 7.
