  • Accessibility features like Arachnophobia modes are becoming more common in video games.

As players check out the Monster Hunter Wilds open beta, the game's accessibility features have been found, including an arachnophobia setting. As Capcom's latest title in the long-running franchise approaches its launch date early in 2025, new information continues to come out. Alongside the inclusion of new locations and monsters, fans have been able to check out Monster Hunter Wilds open beta.

During the Monster Hunter Wilds October 23 livestream, Capcom revealed a full open beta schedule which began exclusively for PlayStation Plus subscribers on October 28. The open beta experience gives players a very brief look at the upcoming game with the ability to create a character, hunt a Doshaguma, and to check out the very beginnings of the story. However, some players have taken it upon themselves to investigate the game's settings and have come across a very welcome accessibility feature.

The Monster Hunter Wilds open beta comes with an Arachnophobia mode for players who have difficulty with insects, "multi-legged" creatures, and spiders. Written as Arachnophobia Assistance within the accessibility options menu, enabling the option to adjust the appearance of certain creatures, while leaving the movement and difficulty intact. As players discovered, switching the option on, essentially turns the creature into an oozy blob.

How Arachnophobia Mode Works in Monster Hunter Wilds

During the open beta and with the option enabled, some of Monster Hunter Wilds endemic life found around the map turns into moving slime, making them much less threatening looking for those with an aversion to bugs and spiders. However, what isn't clear is how this setting may evolve or impact the signature creatures found in the full game. Outside the mosquito-like Rompopolo, Monster Hunter Wilds also features Lala Barina, the most spider-like looking creature currently confirmed for the game.

Over the past few years, Arachnophobia modes have started to appear more frequently in games, initially making headlines in Obsidian's Grounded, a game were kids have been shrunk and are trying to survive in the backyard of their house. Following in Grounded's footsteps were World of Warcraft: The War Within, Lethal Company, and even Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 to name a few. Taking a cue from the film franchise, Hogwarts Legacy's Arachnophobia Mode also gives spiders roller skates while removing other details from them.
