Summary

  • Monster Hunter Wilds' concurrent player count on Steam has dropped by half in two weeks, nearing that of Monster Hunter World.
  • The decline in player count could be due to a current lack of strong endgame content compared to the older title.
  • Capcom plans to release more content for Monster Hunter Wilds, including a potential collaboration with Street Fighter, to keep the game fresh and engage players.

The popular Monster Hunter Wilds has recently faced a significant drop in its concurrent player count on Steam, essentially halving its active player base in the last two weeks. These could be somewhat worrying numbers for Capcom, despite Monster Hunter Wilds’ great popularity, as it seems that the game could be struggling to keep its base engaged.

Monster Hunter Wilds was released back in February, and it became one of the most popular games of 2025 so far. Not only did Monster Hunter Wilds become a big critical hit, maintaining an average score of 89 on OpenCritic, the game was a commercial success, too. Monster Hunter Wilds quickly became Capcom’s fastest-selling game to date, selling over 10 million units in its first month.

Despite being a huge hit, the popularity of Monster Hunter Wilds is diminishing around three months after its release. Soon after release, Monster Hunter Wilds reached a peak concurrent player count of over 1,170,000 gamers on Steam. Obviously, these numbers quickly plummeted, but April still saw over 200,000 active players on the platform. During May, however, the numbers are diminishing even more. Data from SteamCharts indicates that Monster Hunter Wilds dropped from around 55,000 to 30,000 active players in just over two weeks, representing a considerable fall, and putting the game’s popularity near Monster Hunter World, a much older title.

Monster Hunter Wilds's Concurrent Player Count Has Dropped by Half in Two Weeks

It’s not hard to speculate why the number of people continuing to play Monster Hunter Wilds could be dwindling, though. Unlike Monster Hunter World, which has years of updates and an official expansion, Wilds is still lacking strong endgame activities, despite all the content that was added during Title Update 1. Fortunately, Capcom has been planning to release more content for the game, as seen in Monster Hunter Wilds’ roadmap. Title Update 2 is set to be released during Summer 2025, and a second cosmetic DLC pack will also be unveiled at this time. The current speculation is that Monster Hunter Wilds’ Title Update 2 will bring back a popular monster from previous titles called Lagiacrus, but not much is known about the free update at the time.

Earlier this week, Capcom also teased a collaboration between Monster Hunter Wilds and Street Fighter. While this collaboration has not yet been confirmed by the developer, it largely hints at new content being added to Monster Hunter Wilds, which is excellent news for gamers who want a fresher experience.
