Despite coming out seven years ago, Monster Hunter World has seen an impressive uptick in sales recently.

2018's entry into the Monster Hunter series propelled it into mainstream popularity. The title was easier for newcomers to get into, and Monster Hunter World had one of the best co-op open worlds of all time in some players' eyes. Its massive commercial success likely played a heavy role in drumming up excitement for the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds, so it's fitting that this latest release would return the favor by boosting the sales of its predecessor.

Capcom recently updated its list of games that sold a million copies or more, revealing that Monster Hunter World has now sold 21.3 million copies, counting the base game alone. If you include the Iceborne DLC, that figure jumps to a staggering 28.1 million. That adds up to over one million new sales in the last three months of 2024, the better part of a decade after the title's initial release. The news adds to an already strong trend in sales, too, with Monster Hunter surpassing 100 million copies sold as a franchise in mid-2024.

Monster Hunter World Sold Over 1 Million Copies in Q4 2024

The recent spike in players solidifies Monster Hunter World as Capcom's best-selling game of all time. It's not the only title in the series to see an impressive bump in the past few months, though. 2021's Monster Hunter Rise sold roughly 700,000 copies at the end of 2024, taking it to 16.7 million in sales overall. That comes despite Monster Hunter Rise losing some DLC content at the start of this year. If World's Iceborne DLC counted as its own game, it would now be the fourth best-selling Capcom title, standing at 14.9 million lifetime sales as of December 2024.

The rush of players to these older titles is most likely due to people itching to get back into the world of Monster Hunter before Wilds drops later this month. Players who want something more can also try out the open beta, as Monster Hunter Wilds has extended its second open beta test until February 17. Wilds is scheduled to be released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on February 28.
