The Pyreborne is the second clan that players will unlock in Monster Train 2, and it is filled with Dragons and Whelps. These creatures are primarily interested in two things, fire and treasure, and they inform the clan's central gameplay mechanics. This guide is here to elaborate upon those mechanics, and it will give players an understanding of what the Pyreborne clan in Monster Train 2 has to offer.

While this guide goes into detail about the Pyreborne's champions, units, spells, and beyond, players who have just a basic understanding of the mechanics detailed in the first section should be able to complete runs with this clan in the early- to mid-Covenant Ranks.

Pyreborne Clan Mechanics in Monster Train 2

The Pyreborne clan has three central mechanics that Monster Train 2 players should understand straightaway:

Pyregel

Pyregel is a debuff that causes the unit that is affected by it to take +1 damage per stack. For example, an enemy that has 10 stacks of Pyregel would take an additional 10 damage every time it is hit.

In general, the strategy with Pyreborne is to inflict enemy units with many Pyregel stacks in order to significantly increase the damage they take from friendly units and spells. Indeed, Pyregel can turn seemingly unimpressive cards into powerful assets, and players should look for ways to apply the debuff as they select units, spells, Artifacts, and beyond.

Multistrike, a keyword that causes units to strike additional times, is great with Pyregel. While the Pyreborne do not have any units with Multistrike, players can gain access to the effect through unit upgrades in Monster Train 2 and by selecting allied clans with Multistrike units.

Dragon's Hoard

The Pyreborne have several ways to earn Dragon's Hoard (eggs), which can be exchanged outside of battle for rewards. Players can save their eggs and turn many in at once for better prizes, and the egg to reward conversion is as follows:

  • 1: Gain 10 Gold.
  • 2: Gain 25 Gold.
  • 3: Gain 25 Gold. A Random Minor Pyreborne Artifact.
  • 4: Gain 25 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts.
  • 5: Gain 50 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts.
  • 6: Gain 50 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. A Random Artifact.
  • 7: Gain 75 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. A Random Artifact.
  • 8: Gain 75 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Artifacts.
  • 9: Gain 75 Gold. A Random Minor Pyreborne Artifact. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Artifacts.
  • 10: Gain 75 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Artifacts.
  • 11: Gain 100 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Artifacts.
  • 12: Gain 100 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. A Random Major Boss Artifact.
  • 13: Gain 150 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Major Boss Artifacts.

Initially, players can only hold eight eggs at once. However, players can increase their max Dragon's Hoard with the Expanded Coffers and Hidden Coffers Artifacts, making it possible for them to access the highest levels of rewards.

It is generally recommended that players save their eggs until they hit their maximum Dragon's Hoard, as the rewards are significantly better at higher levels. That said, if a player is about to go into a battle during which they expect to earn many eggs, and they are very close to the Dragon's Hoard cap, they may want to go ahead and cash in.

With respect to earning eggs, players will find that there are a variety of spells and abilities that grant them. While players should make sure that using these spells and abilities does not lead to problems in combat, they should definitely take advantage of them when they have extra Ember to spare, as repeatedly claiming Dragon's Hoard rewards is a great way to gain lots of power.

One relatively low-cost way to earn eggs comes in the form of Gildmonger, an uncommon unit that grants one Dragon's Hoard upon death. In particular, upgrading this unit with Endless, and putting it in a position where it will die repeatedly, can prove quite powerful, as that strategy can often be used to generate multiple eggs per combat encounter.

Gold

There are several Pyreborne spells and units that benefit from having a stockpile of Gold. The aforementioned Dragon's Hoard rewards are one way that the clan funds its desire for coins, and there are several Pyreborne units and abilities with Avarice, a keyword that causes the unit to earn Gold when it deals unblocked damage.

While Pyreborne spells that consume Gold can be powerful, it is recommended that players only play them when absolutely necessary, instead opting to save their coins for merchants. The exception is Soldier of Fortune, a rare spell, as it is usually possible to regain the Gold lost by playing it.

Pyreborne Clan Champions in Monster Train 2

Lord Fenix

Lord Fenix is the first Pyreborne Champion that players will have access to, and he has three forms:

monster train 2 pyreborne clan guide

  • Overlord
    • Level 1: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Slay: +1 Attack permanently. | 20 Attack, 25 Health
    • Level 2: Ability: Fenix Fire II (Cooldown 3. Explosive. Deal damage equal to this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Slay: +1 Attack permanently. | 30 Attack, 35 Health
    • Level 3: Ability: Fenix Fire III (Cooldown 3. Explosive. Deal damage equal to 2x this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Slay: +1 Attack permanently. | 40 Attack, 45 Health
  • Golden Crown
    • Level 1: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Conjure: Gain 1 Dragon's Hoard. | 15 Attack, 30 Health
    • Level 2: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Conjure: Gain 1 Dragon's Hoard and 15 Gold. | 20 Attack, 45 Health
    • Level 3: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Conjure: Gain 2 Dragon's Hoard and 25 Gold. | 30 Attack, 80 Health
  • Pyremaniac
    • Level 1: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains +1 stacks. | 20 Attack, 30 Health
    • Level 2: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains +2 stacks. | 30 Attack, 40 Health
    • Level 3: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit's attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains +4 stacks. | 40 Attack, 60 Health

The Fenix Fire ability is available to all three versions of Lord Fenix, and players should be looking to use it as much as possible. Indeed, while the benefits of frequently using Fenix Fire are perhaps most apparent when playing with Golden Crown Lord Fenix, Overlord and Pyremaniac also make great use of this ability.

As such, spells, Equipment, and Artifacts that reduce Cooldown Timers, like the Pyreborne Brainspike spell, the Tome of Contracts spell, the Attuned Manacles Artifact, and the Taskmaster's Lash Artifact, are especially strong when using Lord Fenix. Additionally, Artifacts that offer further benefits for using abilities, like Spiritbreaker's Charge and Shaleshell, can make this champion even better.

The Pyreborne have several units with powerful abilities, giving Cooldown Timer reduction utility beyond Lord Fenix.

Aside from looking to maximize the use of Fenix Fire, players should generally be focusing on a Pyregel-based strategy with all three versions of this champion. As previously mentioned, this strategy centers around applying lots of Pyregel debuffs to enemy units, and it is immediately supported by the copies of Firestarter spell that Lord Fenix decks start with.

While Pyremaniac Lord Fenix may have the most obvious synergy with a Pyregel-focused offense, Overlord and Golden Crown can also be used very effectively. Indeed, the bonus rewards that are earned by using Golden Crown can truly transform a run, and a powered-up Overlord Lord Fenix can be truly devastating. This is due, in no small part, to the upgraded Fenix Fire ability that version gets, as the addition of the Explosive keyword is extremely significant.

Overlord Lord Fenix can feel a bit underwhelming in the first few rings, as it can be difficult to consistently trigger his Slay effect. However, once a player reaches Level 2, and adds Explosive to Fenix Fire, they should be able to make up for missed Slay triggers quite easily.

Lady Gilda

monster train 2 pyreborne clan guide

Players will unlock Lady Gilda upon reaching Level 5 with the Pyreborne clan, and she has three forms:

  • Gildmother
    • Level 1: Trample | Summon: Summon a Gilded Egg. | Attack: 35, Health: 60
    • Level 2: Trample | Summon: Summon a Gildeder Egg. | Attack: 60, Health: 90
    • Level 3: Trample | Summon: Summon a Gildedest Egg. | Attack: 100, Health: 15
  • Bloat Matron
    • Level 1: Harvest: Apply Pyregel 2 to enemy units. | Whelp units cost -1 Ember on this floor. | Attack: 10, Health: 45
    • Level 2: Harvest: Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units. | Whelp units cost -1 Ember on this floor. | Attack: 15, Health: 70
    • Level 3: Harvest: Apply Pyregel 6 to enemy units. | Whelp units cost -1 Ember on this floor. | Attack: 20, Health: 100
  • Lady Avarice
    • Level 1: Enchant: Grant Avarice 5. | Attack: 30, Health: 30
    • Level 2: Enchant: Grant Avarice 5. | +10 Attack per 100 Gold you started the turn with. | Attack: 30, Health: 60
    • Level 3: TBD

While Lord Fenix decks start with copies of the Firestarter spell, Lady Gilda decks start with copies of Bloated Whelp instead. This Whelp unit costs one Ember to play, takes up one space, has the Indigestion ability (sacrifice it to deal one damage to enemy units), and has four attack and one health.

This unit has obvious synergies with Bloat Matron, as the Bloated Whelp is both cheaper to play and triggers the Harvest effect with that version, and that is likely Lady Gilda's strongest form in combat. However, the Lady Avarice form also benefits from having immediate access to a handful of low-space units. Indeed, the more units that are on the floor with a Lady Avarice Gilda, the more units she can enchant with instances of Avarice 5, leading to more Gold.

On the topic of space, the large size of the Pyreborne champions makes one-space units particularly valuable. Fortunately, there are several strong yet small Pyreborne units, and players can decrease the size of larger units through upgrades. Additionally, the Bogwurm's Growth Pyre Heart permanently adds space to floors after each battle, and it is a great way to deal with the clan's size issues.

This leaves Gildmother Gilda, who has no obvious synergies with Bloated Whelps. Her ability to quickly generate Dragon's Hoard can lead to some very fun runs, though, and Trample, which causes excess damage to be applied to subsequent enemy units, can turn Gilda into a strong offensive tool. This is especially true if the champion is equipped with high-damage Equipment.

It is recommended that players summon Gildmother Gilda on the top floor to maximize their chances of keeping the egg she summons alive until the end of combat.

As previously noted, the Bloated Whelp has obvious synergies with some forms of Lady Gilda, and players will start with several copies of the unit when using that champion. It can also help to trigger Artifacts like the Attuned Manacles, Sacrificial Kris, Spiritbreaker's Charge, and Shaleshell.

The Snotty Whelp is also good at triggering Whelp- and ability-focused Artifacts. Additionally, this unit does not need to sacrifice itself to use its ability, making it possible to get multiple triggers out of the same unit. However, the Snotty Whelp cannot trigger the Sacrificial Kris, making the Bloated Whelp better with that specific Artifact.

Players could consider upgrading Bloated Whelps with Endless, allowing them to play and sacrifice them every turn for lots of triggers, both from Artifacts and from Bloated Matron Gilda.

Miser, Stuck Up Whelp, and Wealthy Whelp are uncommon, one-size units that can do a decent job filling in small spaces, even if they are not extremely exciting. The Magma Cultist, on the other hand, is a small unit that can be used to great effect in Pyregel-focused decks, particularly if the deck is filled with low-cost spells.

With respect to uncommon tanks, Gildmonger and Greed Dragon can both do a great job at the front of a floor. As previously noted, Gildmonger with an Endless upgrade can be very powerful, though Greed Dragon may be a better pickup if the player is already rapidly amassing eggs.

Finally, there is Magma Mauler, which can really shine in strong decks that can increase Pyregel applications, and Hot Head, which is great for popping enemy damage shields. To make the most of Mauler, players should look to upgrade it with things like Multistrike and Dualism, and Hot Head is worth considering if a deck is low on cheap options for getting rid of shields (like Flicker).

Pyreblooded and Zealot are the rare Pyreborne units of particular note, with the former having the ability to do lots of damage in decks that are positioned to amass lots of Pyregel, and the latter proving useful in decks that need help with applying debuffs or may be struggling to kill low-health, back line units. Goldtooth can also be a good source of damage, though it can become less potent at higher Covenant Ranks, where it is more difficult to stockpile large amounts of Gold.

Pyreball

2

Alchemy

3

Unsurprisingly, the common Pyreborne spells do not seem very powerful, though they do have their roles to play. Flicker and Pyreball, for example, can be useful for popping damage shields and clearing out low-health enemies, particularly when upgraded, while Lava Flow and Pyrecask are fine ways to get some Pyregel debuffs. Golden Touch and Alchemy can also help players start amassing eggs, though it can be hard to find time to use them as Covenant Rank increases.

The uncommon Pyreborne spells that are worth pursuing are highly contingent upon a player's deck. Pyreborne Brainspike might be a perfect pickup for a deck with Lord Fenix, or other units with strong abilities, while Inequivalent Exchange could be of more interest for a deck capable of easily earning eggs. Or perhaps a player has access to the Taskmaster's Lash Artifact and wants to snag Greed, or is going all out on Pyregel and wants to grab Dragon's Breath.

As with the uncommon spells, the rare Pyreborne spells offer a range of effects, and their usefulness will depend on a player's specific deck. For instance, a player who is not able to apply many Pyregel stacks to a unit would not get much benefit out of Superheated, while a deck without ability-focused units would not find much use for Tome of Contracts. That said, Soldier of Fortune is good for almost any deck, as it is often possible to recuperate the Gold it costs by the end of combat.

Pyreborne Clan Equipment in Monster Train 2

monster train 2 pyreborne clan guide

All the Pyreborne equipment can be useful in the right build. Indeed, Lava Armor can work nicely alongside the Sparkflint Catalyst or Hellfurnace room, Mind Cage is great when equipped to Lord Fenix, and Cursed Dragonstaff can deal lots of damage in spell-heavy decks when fighting against Pyregel-afflicted enemy units.

Pyreborne Clan Rooms in Monster Train 2

monster train 2 pyreborne clan guide

The importance of Pyregel should now be extremely clear, and the Hellfurnace is a great way to supercharge Pyregel-focused decks. The Sacrificial Chamber can also be strong, though, especially if the player plans to frequently sacrifice Bloated Whelps on a particular floor.

Pyreborne Clan Artifacts in Monster Train 2

The Pyreborne have access to two sets of Artifacts, the standard Pyreborne clan Artifacts and those that are accessed through the Dragon's Hoard:

Clan

  • Attuned Manacles: Summoning a Whelp reduces Cooldown of friendly units by 1.
  • Expanded Coffers: Increase Max Dragon's Hoard by 3.
  • Fhyra's Inferno: Dragons apply Pyregel 5 on Strike.
  • Gel Transfusor: When any unit dies, their Pyregel is spread among enemy units.
  • Gold Gloves: Friendly units gain Avrice 2.
  • Hellheart: Apply 10 Pyregel to Non-Flying Boss enemy units that enter the floor below the Pyre Room.
  • Magma Core: Your Pyre applies Pyregel 2 to enemy units on all floors on Revenge.
  • Prismatic Dragonscale: At the end of battle, gain 3 Dragon's Hoard if your Pyre took no damage.
  • Sacrificial Kris: Apply Pyregel 5 to enemy units when a Whelp dies.
  • Sparkflint Catalyst: When a unit without Pyregel gains Pyregel, it gains +6 stacks.
  • Spiritbreaker's Charge: After using an ability, friendly units gain +5 Attack.

Dragon's Hoard

  • Ember Charge: On your first turn, +2 Ember.
  • Fhyra's Breath: Whelps apply Pyregel 3 on Strike.
  • Flaming Talons: When an enemy unit ascends, they gain Pyregel 2.
  • Hellfire Bellows: When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains +1 stack.
  • Hidden Coffers: Increase max Dragon's Hoard by 2.
  • Medallion of Superiority: Units gain +3 Health and +3 Attack for each upgrade on their card.
  • Pyreborne's Insignia: When you equip a friendly unit, apply Conduit 4.
  • Shaleshell: After using an ability, friendly units gain Armor 3.
  • Sharpened Teeth: Dragons and Whelps gain +8 Attack.
  • Sizzling Firecracker: Spells gain +3 damage for each upgrade on their card.
  • Taskmaster's Lash: When you damage your own units, reduce Cooldown by 1.

Pyreborne Clan Allies in Monster Train 2

The Luna Coven has strong synergy with the Pyreborne, as that clan is able to massively increase Magic Power with its Conduit keyword. Indeed, this effect can turn even the most unimpressive spells into sources of big damage and healing, and it does tremendous work alongside Pyreclasm, a rare Pyreborne spell that multiples Magic Power by five.

monster train 2 pyreborne clan guide

Additionally, the Luna Coven has some great one-space units, which fit in nicely alongside the large Pyreborne units. Many of these small units serve as the primary sources for Conduit, making it easy to support Pyreborne spells with that powerful effect.

Finally, players who make Luna Coven their allied clan will get immediate access to Witchweave, a zero-cost spell that deals or heals one damage. Not only will players be improving this spell with Conduit, Witchweave also works with Pyreborne cards like the Cursed Dragonstaff Equipment and Magma Cultist unit, providing even more reasons to look to this Monster Train 2 clan for support.
