NetherRealm Studios boss Ed Boon has recently revealed the official sales numbers for Mortal Kombat 1, which indicate that the title is the best-selling fighting game of the current generation. While Mortal Kombat 1 has not been as well-received as its predecessors and is no longer receiving fresh content, it appears to have been incredibly popular nonetheless.
Mortal Kombat 1 was released in 2023 as a reboot for the popular fighting series. While Mortal Kombat 1 received generally positive reviews from critics, holding an average score of 84 on OpenCritic, the title was greatly criticized by part of the fanbase. Some of the criticism has been aimed at its perceived lack of content compared to other titles and issues with the online experience.
Mortal Kombat's Latest Reveal Proves It's Time To Pull One Iconic Fighter Off the Bench
A recent announcement surrounding Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection calls for one fighter to make a grand return in future Mortal Kombat titles.
Mortal Kombat 1 Has Sold Over 6.2 Million Copies
Despite being a controversial entry in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 1 has sold over 6.2 million units, according to Ed Boon (spotted by PC Gamer). While the numbers pale in comparison to Mortal Kombat 10’s 12 million copies sold, or MK11’s record of 15 million, this still puts MK1 as the best-selling fighting game in the current gen. Other big hits of the generation, such as Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, for example, have sold 5 and 3 million copies, respectively. NetherRealm’s Injustice 2 does not have official numbers, but it’s known that it reached over 1.5 million copies sold in three months. The only game with a fair chance of dethroning MK1 is Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, which sold 5 million copies in only 3 months. However, the game has not received any official sales updates in the last six months.
The timing of the information is certainly curious, as NetherRealm Studios announced back in May that Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer receive DLC content. The team will continue to support the game with balance adjustments and fixes, though, as it focuses on the next project.
Fans were already dreading the end of content support for MK1 since Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition was shadow-dropped earlier this year. When it was still being supported, MK1 received two character packs and the Khaos Reigns expansion.
It remains to be seen if Mortal Kombat 1 will continue to be the king of the current generation, and where NetherRealm Studios will take the next entry in the series to reclaim its popularity. Hopefully, gamers will continue to see more excellent fighting games, and the next generation will be more competitive than the current one.
