With no prior announcement, Warner Bros. Games has released Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition. Mortal Kombat 1 was first released in 2023 and, like most other games in the long-running fighting game series, it earned mostly positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success. NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games have supported Mortal Kombat 1 in the two years since its release with regular updates and paid DLC that has added brand-new content to the game.
Mortal Kombat 1 received two Kombat Packs in the years since its initial launch, expanding the game's roster with returning fan favorites and notable guest stars. Kombat Pack 1 featured the likes of Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Homelander, while Kombat Pack 2 added Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian, and the T-1000 from Terminator 2 to the mix. Now there's a new version of the game that bundles the DLC with the base game.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 release date right around the corner, Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition does seem like a bit of a missed opportunity. Mortal Kombat 1 on the Nintendo Switch suffers from significant performance and graphical problems that are not present in other versions of the game. A native Nintendo Switch 2 port could rectify that problem for Nintendo fans, but it doesn't appear as though Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition is coming to Nintendo's next-generation home console/handheld hybrid at this time.
In any case, fighting game fans that have yet to pick up Mortal Kombat 1 should definitely consider picking up the Definitive Edition. The sheer amount of content available should keep them busy for a long time. As far as Mortal Kombat goes, fans can expect new games in the franchise to come in the future, as well as the Mortal Kombat 2 movie to hit theaters on October 24.
