Ed Boon, the legendary co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, has confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 will not have a traditional Krypt. The Krypt has been a controversial staple among the fanbase for the last six games, and now the series will have a different unlocking system for Mortal Kombat 1.

Now that some some have gotten hands-on previews of Mortal Kombat 1, fans of the franchise are looking for every detail they can find about the future reboot for the series. One of the questions that many fans have involves the Krypt, a special feature where players can spend Koins to unlock concept art, finishers, arenas, and even new characters. The Krypt first debuted in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and was presented as a basic-looking graveyard with 676 Koffins to unlock. By Mortal Kombat 11, the Krypt introduced a third-person play style with a narrative involving Shang Tsung aiding the player.

Ed Boon recently addressed if players were going to see the return of the Krypt after Mortal Kombat 11 by stating, “I can tell you it’s not the Krypt. But we’re gonna have a whole new system for unlocks.” Boon gave no reason why the feature has been removed, but judging by the tone of the interview with the emphasis on rebooting the franchise, getting rid of the Krypt seems like a natural fit. No hints were given as to what feature will be replacing the Krypt, with more details expected over the next few months.

The rest of the interview was filled with other bloody details, such as who the main villain will be in the game, the benefits of using an SSD to produce amazing-looking backgrounds, and a quick explanation of how Kameo Fighters work in Mortal Kombat 1. Boon also talked about how some fatalities have been rejected for “crossing the line” and how big his gaming backlog is, revealing that he hasn’t gotten to play God of War Ragnarok yet and wants to try out Street Fighter 6.

Ed Boon is known for listening to feedback from the fans when it comes to adding modes to Mortal Kombat, and it looks like enough fans have spoken up about their distaste for the RNG system that the Krypt was fueled by. While some fans appreciate the creativity, many players feel burned when they unlock something disappointing or unlock nothing at all. Judging by the updates on the game so far, it’s fair to say that the new system will be a breath of fresh air.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
