Summary

  • Mortal Kombat 1 could be a bad omen for Sonya Blade's future in the series.
  • Sonya's absence in the game's timeline would be a major shift for Mortal Kombat.
  • The lack of concrete indication about Sonya's existence raises eyebrows for fans.

Unless something changes in the near future, Mortal Kombat 1 may have spelt an ill omen for one of the series' most enduring fighters. Since Mortal Kombat 1 is still seeing support, with another DLC wave on the way, there are still chances for that to change. As it stands now, one character that has been a series constant might not be in the new timeline at all. Losing a longtime fighter would be a major shift, even for a game that changed the status quo so much. So far, Mortal Kombat 1's roster still has a notable hole.

The makeup of Mortal Kombat 1's roster includes characters from all across the series. Series stalwarts like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Mileena are all present, alongside more unexpected choices like Li Mei and Reiko. The base roster even includes Geras, who was introduced in Mortal Kombat 11. In addition to its wide-reaching roster, plenty of changes were made to the status quo. Several previous villains became heroes, while a couple of heroes also made some surprising turns to the side of evil. Mortal Kombat 1 made good on its promise to reset the timeline, and the future of the new timeline should prove interesting.

Sonya Blade Only Exists as a Kameo in Mortal Kombat 1

Sonya Blade is Not Playable in Mortal Kombat 1

One notable presence among Mortal Kombat 1's Kameo fighters is Sonya Blade, mostly due to the fact that she isn't on the main roster. Sonya has been a part of the series since the first game. While she has missed a few games in the past, her appearance in Mortal Kombat 1 comes with an additional caveat. While some Kameo fighters, such as Khameleon and Sareena, are shown in the new timeline, Sonya is not. Her only appearances come when she is chosen as a Kameo fighter. So far, there is no concrete indication that Sonya actually exists in Mortal Kombat 1's timeline.

After 2 DLC Waves, Sonya is Still Missing From Mortal Kombat 1

Sonya can still return, but her lack of presence in Mortal Kombat 1's Khaos Reigns DLC puts her in a tougher spot. If a third wave of DLC doesn't add her to the roster, then Sonya will likely end up sitting out of the game entirely. While she could still become playable in Mortal Kombat 2, her lack of presence in the first game of the new timeline might not be a good omen. Almost every important character from the series is present and accounted for in some way. Sonya's absence in Mortal Kombat 1's timeline is a difficult anomaly to ignore.

So far, there is no concrete indication that Sonya actually exists in Mortal Kombat 1's timeline.

Sonya's Absence Would Impact Mortal Kombat Going Forward

If Sonya doesn't make an appearance, then it would signal another major shift for Mortal Kombat 1's timeline. She was a steadfast ally of the forces of light throughout the series. While the heroes have new allies, such as Baraka and Mileena, Sonya's lack of presence would surely be felt. Sonya's absence would also throw the future of another character into question as well, that being Cassie Cage. In the past timeline, Cassie was the daughter of Sonya and Johnny Cage. While Cassie could still be born even if Sonya never appears, the circumstances would probably lead to her being a significantly different character.

Cassie Cage from Mortal Kombat XI

Sonya Blade's presence in the new timeline of Mortal Kombat 1 is still unknown. Her future in Mortal Kombat has not been set in stone, but her lack of presence outside of her Kameo role can raise some eyebrows. While not as famous as someone like Scorpion, Sonya is still an iconic member of the Mortal Kombat cast. If she doesn't return, then it will be one of the timeline's most dramatic changes. Unless something is done about it, Mortal Kombat 1 could be an ominous sign for the future of Sonya Blade.
