Originally released in October 1997 for the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 consoles, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero is the first installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise that is not considered a fighting game. The spin-off takes place before the events of the first Mortal Kombat title, with the focus squarely on Bi-Han, the series' first Sub-Zero. By comparison, Mortal Kombat: Special Forces was released in June 2000 for the PS1, and players controlled Jax in a mission to hunt down Kano and his gang. However, both Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces are considered low points for the franchise.

However, both of these maligned Mortal Kombat games may soon get another chance in the spotlight. On the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit, Redditor The_Iceman2288 linked out to a video that was taken from a since-deleted Twitter post by a user named Peina81. The video was taken from Atari's booth at Gamescom, and showed the logos of Mortal Kombat Anthologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces alongside previously announced titles like Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Mortal Kombat Advance. The inclusion of both spin-offs would mark the first time each has seen a re-release after their initial launches.
The Gamescom video also gave a glimpse into the Legacy Kollection's main menu, which showed various Mortal Kombat titles and their platforms that can be selected on a horizontal-scrolling menu. Though rumors must be taken with a fine grain of salt, given that the video footage was taken from Gamescom, it lends credence to the notion that a proper reveal from Atari and Digital Eclipse is imminent. While a release date for the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection has not been officially revealed as of this writing, previous leaks claimed that the compilation could launch by the end of September. It remains to be seen when Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will be in the hands of fans.
Despite the reputations that Mortal Kombat: Special Forces and Mortal Kombat Anthologies: Sub-Zero carry, their additions would go a long way towards preserving the history of the Mortal Kombat franchise.
