Each of these games offer unique, immersive atmospheres, and they do so in their own ways. From quiet fishing stooped in Lovecraftian horror, to suburban side-scrolling adventures, there should be something here for all kinds of players.

1 Duskers

A Tense, Sci-Fi Experience

Although players don't necessarily take on the role of a specific character in Duskers, its atmosphere remains palpable, thanks in large part to the CCTV visuals from which the players view the game. In Duskers, players pilot several hulking drones through a variety of derelict spaceships, which often leads to intense situations.

The atmosphere of Duskers is intense, sometimes bordering on horror, as players control their drones through a series of console commands. The game's dark and creepy space-wrecks are slow to explore, and often crawling with hostile creatures. Combined with a lack of self-defense options, Duskers frequently offers an eerie atmosphere.

2 Dredge

Atmospheric Fishing In Lovecraftian Waters

This Lovecraft-inspired fishing game sees players captaining their very own fishing boat, exploring an archipelago to catch fish, discover secrets, and purchase upgrades. The flat-color, low-poly style and geometric character designs provide ample visuals, and the combination of good lighting, music, and writing cultivates an immersive atmosphere.

Dredge won't be for everyone; the gameplay loop is ridiculously simple, and fairly repetitive. Players will spend most of their time in Dredge engaging in the fishing mini-game, interacting with NPCs, and working towards various upgrades. There aren't too many deep systems in Dredge, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it.

3 Rain World

A Simulated Ecosystem

This tough-as-nails survival game sees players exploring a fully-simulated ecosystem as the fictional slugcat. Players will have to flee from predators and hunt prey to stay alive, but the game's variety of simulated creatures will often get in the way.

The impressive atmosphere created through the pixel art and procedural animations, understated soundtrack, and intense gameplay makes for one of the most immersive 2D games on Steam. Rain World won't be for everyone, as it's incredibly challenging and hard to learn, but for those that stick it out, it's one of the most atmospheric indie games out there.

An Intense, Top-Down Horror Game

Although the game is top-down and 2D, the game never fails to be horrifying; its variety of creatures, environments, and general imagery are all frequently disturbing.

Darkwood is a survival horror game at heart, with a heavy focus on resource gathering and management, with a limited inventory to boot. Combat in Darkwood is fast and deadly, which further adds to the game's intense atmosphere. Overall, Darkwood manages to be a tremendously immersive and atmospheric horror game despite its top-down pixel-art visuals, often leaving plenty to the imagination.

5 Night In The Woods

A Suburban Adventure

This stylized 2D side-scrolling adventure puts players in the shoes of Mae Borowski, a college dropout, as she returns to the former mining town that was once her home. The game's well-written characters, music, sound, and overall narrative work together to create a cohesive atmosphere in a cozy suburban town.

Night In The Woods is a story-driven adventure game, so those looking for an abundance of interesting mechanics or systems are unlikely to find it here. However, what Night In The Woods does offer is a tangible atmosphere and wonderful visual style.

6 INSIDE

A Quiet, Narrative Puzzler

It's not often that a puzzle game manages to capture the imagination of its player, but INSIDE does just that. The game's dark and eerily quiet world is a creepy, unnerving place to explore, and it even evokes elements of horror by putting players in the shoes of a hunted boy.

This slow-paced, narrative-driven cyberpunk adventure game tasks players with delivering packages with their hover car. Although players will spend plenty of time cruising through the neon streets of a cyberpunk city, dubbed Nivalis, they'll often have the opportunity to step out of the car and explore the streets on foot.

Cloudpunk uses a unique voxel-based art style to create its mesmerizing 3D environments, and each nook and cranny of Nivalis is a joy to explore, especially from the comfort of the hover car. Furthermore, the well-crafted setting, grounded characters, and excellent music provide an immersive atmosphere throughout.

9 The Long Dark

Survival In A Harsh Winter Environment

This hardcore survival game features a focus on careful resource management, knowledge, and fighting against the elements. Players will have to contend with the cold, hungry predators, and the many other threats that the frozen wilderness can offer.

The Long Dark's distinctive art style, well-realized winter environments, and well-crafted soundscape all synergize to create a breathtaking atmosphere that works perfectly in tandem with the brutal gameplay. There's a steep learning curve that can take a lot of effort to push past, but the cold, winter atmosphere helps make it worth the time.

10 Firewatch

A Quiet, Narrative Mystery

This first-person mystery game puts players in the shoes of a volunteer staying in a lookout tower, keeping an eye out for wildfires in the wilderness of Wyoming during the late 80s. Firewatch's greatest strength, however, is its palpable atmosphere.

The game's vibrant 3D environments are consistently stunning, often providing wonderful vistas that will have players savoring every moment. Although the game is mostly a walking simulator, the atmosphere is made all the more immersive through the conversations between the player character and their supervisor, Delilah, both of whom are brought to life by talented voice actors.
