In 1994, id Software continued their fantastic 90s FPS streak with Heretic. This classic title moved away from the sci-fi, gun-heavy games the genre is famous for and into the realm of fantasy. The game broke new ground with its inventory system and gameplay. While Heretic was created using the DOOM engine, it offers a unique take on the genre, using magic over bullets.

Heretic's influence can still be seen today, most notably in the retro shooter genre. Several fantasy-themed shooters have been released, such as Graven, Wizordum, and Amid Evil, which are all heavily-influenced by this original release.

Quake was a step forward in game design and introduced more verticality into the 3D world. The series would go on to have a big influence on competitive and online gaming with Quake III Arena. However, the original Quake remains an all-time classic that has stood the test of time.
