All Might’s time as a hero in My Hero Academia was perhaps one of the best runs of any superhero in the history of the series. As he came into his power, All Might completely defeated the forces of evil for a time, becoming a symbol of justice that ushered in an era of peace. His reign as the top superhero was so dominant that the world's most powerful villains had to think about defeating All Might as the symbol of peace before they could even consider implementing their schemes.
With such a glorious reign as the impossible-to-defeat hero of justice, All Might’s hero career seemed like it would go on forever. However, as we find out in My Hero Academia, All Might was actually on a ticking clock the whole time while he tried to find a successor. All Might’s career ended gracefully, able to pass on his power and mantle while protecting the ones he cared about.

How All Might Hoped to Protect His Legacy
After his battle with All For One before the start of the series, All Might found himself continually growing weaker. He knew that his time as a hero and the symbol of peace would not last long, so he endeavored to become a teacher at U.A. High School to search for his successor.
Along the way he was impressed by the tenacity of a kid he met named Izuku Midoriya, who he eventually decided to pass on his quirk “one for all” to. At that moment, All Might had started the end of his hero career, and he would grow much weaker as the series continued. However, as the symbol of peace, he needed to maintain his position in the spotlight to ensure the villains of the world would not rise up until his new apprentice was ready.

This maneuvering was not easy, as he had to make use of his limited transformation time as the muscular version of himself to both fend off villains and teach his students at school, all while keeping his declining strength a secret. Luckily, Midoriya’s passion for making All Might’s power his own came in clutch during many encounters with villains.
I hope you're celebrating while you can All Might. Because very soon, this temporary peace will come to a violent end
Eventually, All Might was able to keep his dignity against all odds when he faced off again against All For One, digging into the last dregs of his power to defeat the villain once again.

The Aftermath of All Might Stepping Down
In the wake of All Might retiring, Endeavor became the number 1 hero in his place. However, Endeavor was not happy to have earned the title this way, never having the chance to overcome All Might in his prime.
“There's a difference between being lucky and being worthy. One is by accident while the other is by working for it. Never get those two confused.” -All Might.
Although there was no longer a singular symbol of peace for villains to fear, All Might managed to inspire a new generation of heroes thanks to his final fight being televised and watched live by countless people. Despite now being powerless, All Might was still in a great position to influence and encourage these new heroes as they overcame their own challenges. Looking ahead to the ending of My Hero Academia in the manga, All Might is still an active part of the hero scene. He was seen working with various heroes to develop a new version of the armored all might suit t o help Deku rejoin the hero world as a teacher and perform heroic acts once again.
