This article contains spoilers from the My Hero Academia manga.

My Hero Academia continues to be one of the most popular anime and manga series to this day, despite the main story having wrapped up last year in the manga, at the very least. As fans expected, Horikoshi ended his manga after the events of the Final War, where Izuku Midoriya and all the Heroes fought All For One and his minions. The battles were absolutely incredible and fans saw majestic displays of power throughout.

Expectedly, the Heroes won the battles in an emphatic manner towards the end, and fans couldn't be more delighted with that. However, Horikoshi's ending wasn't liked by all. As is the case with just about every story, there was a section of fans who disliked the ending. Now, Horikoshi has revealed his alternate ending for My Hero Academia, which could've changed the events of the Final War greatly. In it, Deku would've remained Quirkless forever, while the side characters would've been somewhat disappointing.

  • He Gave Deku A Hero Armor

My Hero Academia's ending was significant for just about every main character of the story. Particularly, fans loved the focus that Izuku Midoriya received in the final segment of the story. In his fight against Shigaraki Tomura, Izuku was absolutely mesmerizing and he gave it his all, even after All For One took over his body. Izuku even went as far as sacrificing the One For All for victory in this battle and it goes without saying that his dedication was absolutely incredible. After the war, Izuku was left with embers of the One For All, and as fans know, they burned out by the time he graduated, and eventually, Izuku was left Quirkless, but given a Hero Armor. The alternate ending of My Hero Academia would've changed this significantly.

This is the story of how I became the greatest Hero! — Izuku Midoriya

In Horikoshi's alternate ending, Izuku Midoriya would've stayed Quirkless forever. No Armor Power-Up was planned for him in his version of My Hero Academia. Horikoshi wanted him to permanently give up being a Hero. His role, according to Horikoshi, would've been to be a teacher permanently. More importantly, in the alternate ending, most of the focus would've been on Deku and not on the side characters. The final panel of MHA shows all the major Heroes jumping up together, but in Horikoshi's initial version of the ending, the final panel would've been Deku telling a kid that they can become a Hero even after he used up his powers. Here's what Horikoshi had to say:

Question: Chapter 1 ended with "This is the story of how I became the greatest hero", and in chapter 324 that changed to "This is the story of how we all became the greatest heroes". Then in chapter 430, the story ends with "This is the story of how we all continue to reach a hand out to others together". Was this the plan from the beginning of the series?

Horikoshi's answer: No! It wasn't! I originally planned for it to end with Deku becoming a teacher and saying "You can be a hero!". Having used up his powers but looking fully confident... Like that. The reason it changed is that this series was no longer a story just about Deku and One For All. In this series I was exploring "What does it mean to be the greatest hero?" And the answer this manga came to is that it means "reaching a hand out to others", so I thought I would put the answer in writing and that's how the final monologue of chapter 430 became what it is now.

What Horikoshi's Changed Ending Means For My Hero Academia

Deku's Role In The Story Was Significantly Altered

Clearly, the biggest change in Horikoshi's My Hero Academia ending would've been for Izuku Midoriya. Deku would've been left as a teacher, which means that his hero days would've been long behind him. More than that, Deku would also have been declared the greatest hero, which didn't happen at the end of the main story.

Fans would've seen Izuku Midoriya quit being a Hero permanently, and he would've lived his life without regrets, which isn't half bad. The side characters would also have been a lot less relevant in the alternate ending of My Hero Academia. Horikoshi wouldn't have paid as much attention to the others in this version of the story, and this is one of the biggest reasons why fans are glad that the ending was somewhat changed.
