When talking about the most well-known and beloved manga and anime series in Japan and worldwide, one simply can’t ignore My Hero Academia. Over the years, My Hero Academia became one of the most successful and best-selling manga series ever, and for good reasons. Horikoshi’s story managed to captivate millions with his beloved characters, but sadly, the manga reached a conclusion just last year. Fans saw it coming a while before, but it was still hard to let go of this manga.

Thankfully, MHA might have a new successor, and it's a manga recommended by Horikoshi himself. This manga is none other than Ichi the Witch. Not only that, but fans can also look forward to Horikoshi’s very own new manga, which could carry the legacy left behind by My Hero Academia.

  • A New Manga That Started After MHA Ended
  • A Manga That Was Recommended by Horikoshi

My Hero Academia’s ending in 2024 left a huge hole in Shonen Jump, especially since it ended alongside Jujutsu Kaisen, another big hit for the magazine. With both these series gone, new series have risen, and one of the most promising new mangas is Ichi the Witch. This manga started in September of 2024, just one month after MHA ended. The manga quickly got pretty popular, especially after Horikoshi himself recommended it to fans. This definitely helped, as mangas are often at a big risk of being axed in the first year of their serialization. Horikoshi really helped this manga blow up, and now, it’s one of Shonen Jump’s most successful series even without an anime adaptation.

While MHA and Ichi the Witch are set in very different worlds, they both have lovable main characters, and an endearing world and story. Many fans of MHA are already into Ichi the Witch, and it will only get more popular once it gets an anime adaptation, something that's sure to happen if it continues being this successful. It could very well become the new My Hero Academia.

A New Story Separate From MHA

Deku declares that he's here! - My Hero Academia

While many MHA fans are now following and reading Ichi the Witch weekly, it isn’t a work of Horikoshi, so it might never fill the gap that MHA left behind.

MHA is, sadly, not coming back, at least not anytime soon. The final content for the series was all collected in the fan book, the art book, and the art exhibition from Horikoshi. However, one thing fans can look forward to is Horikoshi’s very own new manga. It might be the closest thing fans get to a true MHA successor. Horikoshi has already confirmed he wants to create a new manga, and while it won’t be the same, it will still carry the same flair as it will have Horikoshi’s writing and art.

When Horikoshi will drop this new manga remains a mystery, however, and it could be some time until he returns to the industry. Regardless, many fans will definitely be waiting for him.

Question: Are you considering doing another manga?

Horikoshi: Yes, I'm already in the concept stage. Luckily, there is something I still want to do that I couldn't do with MHA, so I'm hoping to channel that feeling into this. When I announce my next series, I hope it will be in Weekly Shonen Jump. So, I'm working on the concept now, thinking about how I want to challenge myself to Jump one more time.

For now, fans can stick to Ichi the Witch and enjoy a world full of brilliant characters, just like My Hero Academia, with special abilities just like Quirks.
