Being one of the most iconic parts of the entire Naruto franchise, the Tailed Beasts bring a whole new aspect of combat that exists in this world. The characters that house these beasts are some of the strongest in the series, owing to the vast amounts of Chakra that the beasts within them provide, as well as the host of other powers that only the Jinchuriki can use.
More than just this incredible Chakra and overwhelming strength, the Tailed Beasts had powerful signature abilities that were unique to them, meaning that only they and their own Jinchuriki could use them. In doing this, the Tailed Beasts added a brand-new aspect to the way that they approach combat, so let's see each of the unique abilities that the Tailed Beasts used in Naruto!
Naruto: The Fated Battle Between Brothers Arc, Explained
One of the most important arcs in the entire franchise, this arc saw great development for Sasuke and the perfect resolution for Itachi.
Shukaku Has More Than One Unique Skill
|
First Appearance |
Naruto, Episode 78, "Naruto's Ninja Handbook" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Gaara |
Shukaku is the Tailed Beast that is housed in Gaara for much of the series. Its main strength comes in the form of the unique ability that it has given to Gaara called Sand Manipulation, which allows the user to control every aspect of sand as much as they want.
Why it's so Powerful
With the ability to fully control sand, Gaara fought Naruto, who himself had activated a bit of the Nine Tails' power. In the form where he summons Shukaku, he also gains the ability to use Wind Release techniques and has one of the best defenses in the entire series; the automatic Shield of Sand. Shukaku's Kekkei Genkai is the powerful Magnet Release, which is a very sought-after ability that allows him to control magnetic forces.
Matatabi Gains Fast And Destructive Attacks
|
First Appearance |
Naruto: Shippuden, Episode 72, "The Quietly Approaching Threat" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Yugito Nii |
Unlike the rest of her fellow Tailed Beasts, Matatabi's unique skill is one that she is always passively using. Since she has very flexible muscles, she is by far the fastest out of all the Tailed Beasts, making her an incredible threat in any battle situation. This speed makes her very elusive and difficult to face.
Why it's so Powerful
Alongside this incredible speed, Matatabi also has the ability to use Fire Release, which she utilizes masterfully to make powerful fireballs. When Yugito activates the 'Version 2' transformation for Matatabi, she also uses powerful slashing attacks with her claws that can send anyone flying.
Isobu Has Incredible Speed And Defense
|
First Appearance |
Naruto: Shippuden, Episode 92, "Encounter" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Yagura |
Isobu was the 3-Tails beast and found itself inside Yagura, who was the Fourth Mizukage. Since he took on the appearance of a turtle, Isobu could move at blinding speeds underwater, and, on top of this, his unique skill allowed him to create coral. Once in the water, the true strength of this beast becomes clear with its powerful use of Water Release.
Why it's so Powerful
Isobu's power was quite formidable everywhere, but it shone the most underwater. Isobu could create powerful shockwaves that could create gigantic tidal waves and cause untold devastation. Moreover, he became extremely nimble and quick underwater, often using his massive and spiky shell to destroy whatever was in his path.
Son Goku Combines 2 Release Techniques
|
First Appearance |
Naruto: Shippuden, Episode 165, "Nine Tails, Captured!" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Roshi |
By mixing Earth Release and Fire Release techniques, Son Goku was able to make molten lava that it used to defeat its enemies. This lava took the form of an offensive ball of molten rock that formed inside its mouth that it could shoot out onto any foes to melt or greatly damage them. Since Son Goku resided within another person's body, its Jinchuriki could also use these lava-based attacks.
Why it's so Powerful
Lava became the default attack for this beast, and it could create a torrent of it to rapidly spread the molten rock onto its foes. Using this ability, Roshi could use this molten rock to cover his body to make an armor of sorts that was incredibly durable and powerful.
Kokuo Has Combat Versatility
|
First Appearance |
Naruto: Shippuden, Episode 165, "Nine Tails, Captured!" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Han |
Kokuo's unique ability came into play when Han used its 'Version 2' form. In this form, Han can create several arms made out of pure Chakra to subdue and deal a great amount of damage to his opponents, as was seen in Kokuo's battle against Gyuki.
Why it's so Powerful
Though sprouting an extra few arms may initially seem to be a waste of a unique ability, it allows Kokuo to have a lot of combat versatility. Against Gyuki, Han was able to pin it down with the arms and charged it using Kokuo's horns, goring the 8 Tails and sending it flying.
Saiken's Acid Is Corrosive
|
First Appearance |
Naruto: Shippuden, Episode 151, "Master and Student" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Utakata |
In its 'Version 2' form, Saiken gives its Jinchuriki, Utakata, the ability to emit an extremely powerful and corrosive alkaline substance that can dissolve pretty much anything. It also gave Utakata the ability to use its own Chakra as a shroud to cover itself.
Why it's so Powerful
When Utakata had Saiken's shroud ability, he gained considerable defensive boosts. This was on full display when it absorbed and completely nullified an incredibly destructive attack like Fury, which can create a massive explosion.
Chomei Has A Unique Power
|
First Appearance |
Naruto: Shippuden, Episode 165, "Nine Tails, Captured" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Fu |
Chomei, being a bug-themed Tailed Beast, is unique due to its ability to fly, something that none of the others can do. It can give its Jinchuriki, Fu, wings that allow her to fly and deliver painful bites, though this seems weak in comparison to the others. Other than temporarily blinding Gyuki and Kurama with its wings, most of its powers remain unexplored and those that have been shown don't seem very powerful.
Gyuki Is Friends With Killer B
|
First Appearance |
Naruto: Shippuden, Episode 143, "Eight Tails vs. Sasuke" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Killer B |
The unique ability of Gyuki may not seem very powerful, but the relationship that it has with its Jinchuriki, Killer B, makes it a formidable adversary. Since it resembles an octopus, it can create ink from itself and its Chakra, something which Killer B can mold into solid forms of ink.
Why it's so Powerful
By using these ink powers to form solid objects made of it, Killer B adds to his already very versatile moveset. More than anything else, the synergy that the Beast has with its Jinchuriki is one of the strongest in the series, which is why they're such a formidable team when they work together.
Kurama's The Strongest Of Them All
|
First Appearance |
Naruto, Episode 1, "Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!" |
|---|---|
|
Jinchuriki |
Naruto |
The Nine-Tailed Fox is the strongest Tailed Beast of them all, and its powers clearly show that too. It was shown to create tsunamis and destroy an entire mountain range with a mere swipe of his hands, and its Chakra could be used by Naruto to greatly increase his own speed and strength. In doing so, he would also gain access to an untold amount of new abilities that would set him up as one of the strongest characters in the series.
Why it's so Powerful
Though gaining its cooperation was difficult for Naruto at the start, Kurama eventually became friendly with the titular character, giving him all of its unique abilities and overpowered attacks. It made Naruto stronger and faster than everyone and made his Chakra reserves some of the greatest in the entire series, easily living up to its title of being the strongest Tailed Beast.
Naruto can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Crunchyroll.
