Sports are there to last, and so are sports games. There's not much change in sports, so it’s only fair that sports games remain the same as well. Of course, the graphics get better, the gameplay gets polished, teams get updated, and new mechanics are introduced to make the gameplay feel as close to the real sport as possible. Sports games are all about competition; playing against another player in a 1v1 match, but it looks like2K Sportsis going a step further with their entirely new MyCareer mode inNBA 2K20with Hollywood celebrities making an appearance in the game mode.
EA also added interactive story modes to their popularFIFA andMaddenfranchises; however, it’s important to note that 2K Sports was the one that started this trend with NBA 2K's story mode. The trailer forNBA 2K20's newMyCareer mode shows that thestory mode is even more star-studded than before. Celebrities like Idris Elba and Rosario Dawson play an integral part in the story. Other stars include Thomas Middleditch, Mark Cuban, Scottie Pippen, Lamorne Morris, Ernie Hudson, and Jaleel White. The story mode’s casting rivals that of some big-budget movies.
This is not the first time 2K brought in big-name celebrities for the game's story mode. The previous iteration of the game did feature Anthony Mackie, Hannibal Buress, Michal B. Jordan, and some other celebrities. So, it’s no surprise that the company went a step further and turned the MyCareer mode into a full-blown movie with some serious star-power. SpringHill Entertainment, a media production company founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter is working withNBA 2K20developers on the new MyCareer mode. Both LeBron and Maverick also make an appearance in the story mode.
Most competitive players are interested in better online play and multiplayer matchmaking, but casual fans really like the single-player content. It looks like 2K Sports is going above and beyond to please their casual fanbase with such high production values. It remains to be seen if the gameplay will be as good as the story mode, but fans won't have to wait long to find out. The NBA 2K20demo will be available on 21 August; players will be able to create a custom character and get a head start on the career mode. All the progress from the demo will carry over to the full game.
NBA 2K20will be available on 6 September for PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
