Despite having only released one game so far, 2021's ARPG The Ascent, developer Neon Giant is made up of several industry veterans who have worked on some huge games, including the likes of Wolfenstein, Far Cry 3, and Gears of War. For this reason, it's no surprise that the Swedish studio's next game is looking to dwarf The Ascent in terms of its ambition. Now, Neon Giant has shared the first details about the game that has a working title of 'Project Impact'.

The Best War Games spoke with Neon Giant's creative directors Tor Frick and Arcade Berg who were able to share some preliminary information about Project Impact. The studio's staff have plenty of experience in the FPS genre, and they are looking to put this experience to good use with this upcoming game, which they confirm will indeed be first-person.

Neon Giant Dev Talks Creativity And How The Ascent Was Developed

Neon Giant's Arcade Berg explains why creativity was important while creating the setting for The Ascent in an interview with The Best War Games.

First Details of Project Impact Revealed

With The Ascent being an isometric twin-stick shooter, some may assume that Neon Giant's next game would follow suit. However, the studio's core staff have instead reverted to what Frick described as their 'bread and butter', a first-person game. With years of combined experience in the genre, it seems to be a smart move that will allow Neon Giant to flex its creative muscles while utilizing the staff's key strengths. Frick said,

'' It's first person, with a similar futuristic Cyberpunk setting to what The Ascent had. We're actually going back to where we feel very confident as the team has lots of experience with first-person games. The ambition and the aim are that this game is going to be a reference game. It's going to be in every conversation when someone else wants to make a game like this.''

The World Itself Will Be a Big Focus in Project Impact

Those are strong words from Frick, underlining how high the team is setting the bar for Project Impact. Berg went even further by highlighting how important the world itself will be to the game. Player agency will be one of the key components of Project Impact, with the team pushing to make a highly interactive environment for players. Berg continued that, as more details start to come through about it, the project's ambition may surprise people in the best possible way. He explained,

''We have the confidence to experiment and have fun and really push technology as we move into first person. So I think people will be quite amazed at what they'll be playing once this is out and once we start showing more, it's a huge step forward for the studio. The Ascent was a rather ambitious project for the team. But this is a lot more ambitious. So we think people will be very surprised, in a good way, once we share more about it.''

A first-person game set in an immersive, futuristic world with a high degree of player agency is sure to intrigue fans. Other details can't be shared just yet, leaving much of the project shrouded in mystery for now. Hopefully, Neon Giant can share more information on Project Impact sooner rather than later.

Project Impact is currently in development.
