Netflix's Gears of War Should Include Carmine As A Character And Use An A-List Actor

Netflix's Marketing Would Be Able To Provide A Major Surprise With An Early Death

Gears of War Anthony Carmine "Hey! Are you THE Marcus Fenix, the one who fought at Aspho Fields?"

The Gears of War franchise has no shortage of amazing characters that fans would want to see in the movie in some capacity. While some are necessary, such as Marcus, who Dave Bautista is desperate to play. However, others, such as the Carmine family members, could easily be forgotten. However, even though Anthony Carmine only plays a minimal role in the video game series, he's someone who Netflix should cast because he could add a lot of value and a little comedy to the movie from the jump. This is also why Netflix needs to ensure they cast a major A-list star to play the role.

It would be hilarious to show the actor in the marketing without revealing which character they are playing, only to have them killed off within the movie's first act. This would provide a shock and would also give people a laugh if it was pulled off with the right tone. Of course, it would be important not to give things away in the trailer as Marvel did with Thunderbolts* regarding Taskmaster. However, if the right decisions were made, this would end up being a moment of humor while also giving a nod to a memorable moment from the Gears of War video game series.

Netflix's Treatment Of Carmine Would Set The Tone For The Entire Movie

Having Carmine be killed early on in the film, despite non-gaming fans expecting him to live for a long time due to the casting, would be funny. However, it would also provide a major surprise to people, setting the tone for the entire movie. Gears of War has a lot of emotional story beats, with some of the deaths being upsetting to play through within the games themselves. Therefore, if they were shown and built up properly, they would have a significant impact in a live-action format. That would be intensified by killing off Carmine quickly because audiences would immediately learn that nobody is safe within the movie. The locusts should be shown as a threat in a Gears of War adaptation, or it won't work and will become too cartoonish, which runs the risk of the film being underwhelming. That is why providing an early death would be important because the tension would be set.

This is a tactic that was used in the original Scream with Drew Barrymore. She was the poster girl for the 1996 movie, which made everyone believe she was going to be the main character that would be going up against Ghostface throughout the story, yet she ended up being killed within the first 15 minutes of the film. It's a situation that nobody expected, but it provided a great moment of horror and allowed Ghostface to be seen as a serious threat despite all the jokes and the light tone that he would provide. Gears of War would be able to follow in the same footsteps with Carmine, but it only works if a primary name is attached to the role.

Gears Of War Has The Potential To Be Over The Top With Humor

Netflix Will Have To Strike The Right Balance To Make This Movie Adaptation Work

gears of war reloaded physical and pricing rumors

The world of Gears of War is something that could be taken in two completely different directions with a live-action adaptation, depending on the type of audience Netflix wants to reach. It could be toned down and made to feel more comedic and adventurous to appeal to a broader audience. Subsequently, Netflix could take the opposite approach and make this a serious science fiction action film with great fight scenes and emotional subplots. Both have the possibility of working, but it's the latter that fans truly want to see. It would feel more authentic for the film to be intense, just as it is when gamers are sat playing their way through the shooter. Of course, how intense the movie ends up being will remain to be seen, but adding in a slight comedic moment with a character like Carmine being made rather goofy wouldn't hurt Gears of War.
