Netflix is bringing an adaptation of Richard Osman's debut novel, The Thursday Murder Club, to screens across the globe later this year. Now, the star-studded film has an official release date.
Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment picked up the worldwide film rights for the story back in 2022, with Chris Columbus and Netflix coming on board the project in April 2024. Shortly thereafter, a whole host of famous faces joined the movie's cast. Following in the footsteps of Columbus's Harry Potter films, The Thursday Murder Club features a veritable Who's Who of English actors: Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Richard E. Grant, and Tom Ellis are all set to feature in the film. Throw in a script co-written by stand-up Katy Brand and music from 15-time Academy Award nominee Thomas Newman, and you've got the makings of a great time at the movies.
Netflix's Narnia Film Series Has Found Its White Witch
Netflix’s Narnia has cast a Sex Education star to play the White Witch.
Netflix revealed a first look at The Thursday Murder Club a few days ago on its official Tudum blog. Fans were treated to set photos of the luscious production that featured more than a few famous faces. Unsurprisingly, Columbus told Netflix the illustrious cast is the "finest" he's worked with since the Harry Potter films all those years ago. "They’re just so incredibly well-prepared," he elaborated. "[A]nd it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles." Netflix also revealed that the official release date for the film is August 28, 2025.
Netflix's Thursday Murder Club Adaptation Is Shaping Up To Be An Absolutely Killer Flick
Osman's 2020 novel tells the story of four retirees who go about solving a mysterious murder in a high-class retirement village. The famed BBC television presenter wrote the book in secret over an 18-month period after visiting a retirement community similar to the one featured in his story. The novel became an immediate smash hit and has spawned numerous sequels, with the fifth novel—The Impossible Fortune— set to release on September 25, 2025. The four leads of the stories are former spy Elizabeth Best, retired nurse Joyce Meadowcroft, ex-union leader Ron Ritchie, and inactive psychiatrist Ibrahim Arif. Bagging Helen Mirren, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley to bring those four to life is a genuine coup of the highest order.
In addition to being an Academy Award winner, Mirren has featured in numerous action franchises in the past—including Red and the Fast & Furious series—which gives her an air of credence as a former spy. Both Kingsley and Imrie were seemingly born to play their respective roles, and Brosnan can do pretty much anything he sets his mind to. The legendary Irish actor can headline blockbusters like GoldenEye and Black Adam, do musical comedy as he does in Mamma Mia!, and flex his dramatic chops in flicks like The Ghost Writer.
Throw in beloved character actors like David Tennant, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Jonathan Pryce, and Chris Columbus has been given a treasure chest of acting greats to play around with. All he has to do is slot the puzzle pieces in the correct order, and The Thursday Murder Club should be yet another hit for Netflix.
