Ryan Murphy's crime anthology series Monster has already begun development by Netflix for a fourth season, even though season 3 has yet to be released, and it looks like it will be just as compelling and brutal as ever. It was previously announced that Charlie Hunnam would star as the notorious American serial killer Ed Gein for the third season of Murphy's true crime series titled The Original Monster, following the success of the second season of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which aired in September 2024.
Season 2 of Monster chronicled the case of the real-life brothers Lyle and Erik, who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise Menendez and starred Javier Bardem as José, Chloë Sevigny as Mary Louise “Kitty”, Cooper Koch as Erik Menendez, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Lyle Menendez. However, it was season one of Monster that really got the ball rolling in 2022 as the series dove headfirst into the disturbing yet captivating story of Jeffrey Dahmer, which starred Evan Peters as the sadistic serial killer and sex offender who killed and dismembered seventeen men and boys between 1978 and 1991. The record-breaking first season of Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology reached 1 billion hours of viewing in its first 60 days, making it the third most popular Netflix English language series at the time.

Monster Season 4 Begins Development and Will Adapt the Lizzie Borden Murders
According to Nexus Point News, Monster season 4 is reportedly already on the cards and is set to adapt the Lizzie Borden murders. Going further back in history than ever before, Netflix's adaptation will cover the infamous trial of Lizzie, who was accused of killing her father and stepmother in 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts, which caused a huge national sensation in the United States.
Andrew, Lizzie's father, was found on the living room sofa of their home, brutally hacked to death with a hatchet, while Abby was discovered upstairs with the same mutilation. Lizzie was arrested and tried for the murders a year later, but due to a lack of physical evidence and the belief at the time that a woman couldn’t commit brutal slayings, Lizzie was let off the hook, even though she had tried to purchase poison the day before the murders took place and was alleged to have burned a dress in a stove a few days later. Lizzie went on to live out her days in the same town where the murders took place until she died in 1927.
This won't be the first time the gruesome Lizzie Borden murders have been adapted for the screen, with Christina Ricci taking on the role of Lizzie in Lifetime's 2014 drama, Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, as well as the miniseries The Lizzie Borden Chronicles from 2015. Production on Monster season 4 is set to begin on September 10th in Los Angeles, with casting also underway, so it will be exciting to see what star will take the role of Lizzie. Before that though, Monster Season 3 is expected to be released on Netflix towards the end of 2025.
