  • Netflix and Ubisoft collaborate on new Assassin's Creed series - live-action, animated, and anime adaptations planned.
  • Previous Assassin's Creed film rated poorly - new series aims to redeem franchise from past failures.
  • Showrunners and writers announced for live-action Assassin's Creed series on Netflix, renewing hope for successful adaptation.

In collaboration with Ubisoft, a new Assassin's Creed live-action series on Netflix was originally announced back in 2020, and although news about the adaptation had since dried up over the years, an exciting update on its progress has now been announced. With the two powerful companies teaming up to bring the massive video game franchise to the small screen, this means that other stories from the popular games will see not only live-action, but also animated and anime series in their line-up of projects.

It certainly hasn't been an easy road for game movies in recent years, especially Assassin's Creed. Even though the 2016 film had a host of big names like Michael Fassbender, Jeremy Irons and Marion Cotillard, that wasn't enough to deem it a success. It was reviewed pretty harshly by critics and viewers alike, where it scored a measly 19% rating and a 42% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Some of the comments listed included muffled dialogue, making the film excruciatingly hard to follow, visually unappealing, and featuring an uninteresting cast. However, there’s new hope now that Netflix can redeem the adaptation that many would rather forget and breathe new life into the live-action franchise once more, as it ushers in a bunch of top-notch creatives into its writers’ room.

Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series Has Found Its Writers’ Room

According to Nexus Point News, the live-action Assassin's Creed television series developed by Netflix has now received a big update regarding its production progress as it has found its writers’ room, five years after the adaptation was initially revealed. Although it still isn't clear what the narrative will include, who will star in it, or what stage the series is in regarding development, the site states that executive producer for Westworld, Roberto Patino, will helm the project, as well as Halo's David Wiener.

Other producers and writers who will be joining the piecing together of the Netflix adaptation include HBO's Watchmen and The Acolyte co-executive producer Claire Kiechel, Jaquén Castellanos as co-executive producer (Good American Family and The Affair), Sanaz Toossi as a staff writer, known for A League of Their Own, Emily St John Mandel, producer on Station Eleven, writer Sam Reynolds (The Walking Dead: World Beyond), and Daniel Goldberg and Tom Hemmings, who will both serve as staff writers.

Ubisoft and Netflix's plans had been to develop three projects, which would include two animated and one in live-action, but as yet, none of these have seen the light of day. Jeb Stuart, known for creating the Netflix television series Vikings: Valhalla, was the showrunner for the Assassin's Creed television series but left the project two years ago. Now, with video game adaptations on the upward climb, all thanks to shows like Fallout and The Last of Us, this is probably the best time for an Assassin's Creed live-action to go ahead and redeem itself from its dire adaptation mistakes.
