A new Fear Street could be gracing Netflix's servers soon. The streamer is reportedly interested in working with director Chloe Okuno to bring a new adaptation to life.

In 2021, a trilogy of Fear Street movies was released on Netflix. Set in 1994, 1978, and 1666, the films told the story of Sarah Fier (Kiana Madeira), a teenage girl who was burned at the stake in the 17th century for witchcraft. Her ghost reportedly haunts present-day Shadyside, Ohio, and has cursed them with a string of murders that occur periodically. When Deena (also Madeira) and her friends start to notice the official story doesn't add up, they start digging into the history of their town and uncover the secrets that link it with the neighboring town of Sunnyvale, which has prospered tremendously.

According to Above the Line, Okuno, who directed the psychological thriller Watcher earlier this year, has closed a deal to direct the next story in the Fear Street franchise. Okuno is taking over directorial duties from Leigh Janiak, who directed the first three films. Chernin Entertainment is set to produce this new installment in the franchise. It was first reported that Fear Street would possibly return to Netflix with brand-new films back in July.

The first three Fear Street films proved to be a hit for Netflix. Originally slated for a theatrical release, Netflix acquired the rights to the films and ended up releasing them over three weeks in the Summer of 2021. The films featured a cast full of young talent, including Stranger Things stars Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke, and The White Lotus star Fred Hechinger.

It's unclear if this Fear Street will continue the story told in the first three films. It's possible that Fear Street could become a horror anthology, with the story in the first three films having been wrapped up pretty neatly. On the other hand, the last film in the series features something of a cliffhanger - the witch's book ends up in the hands of an unknown individual. There's also the question of filling in the backstories of some of the killers. There is plenty that isn't known, and some of the known killers have potentially rich stories to tell.

The Fear Street trilogy also features a touching love story at its heart. The characters could potentially appear in future installments of the series. The last they're seen in the movie, it's 1994, meaning that the actresses could return in an installment set in the 2000s or could be recast with older actresses should the film go for a more modern story.

Fear Street is streaming on Netflix.
