Hawkeye is already halfway through its six-episode season and last week’s Echo reveal could soon be followed by another shocking newcomer seen in the show’s latest teaser trailer, one who looks surprisingly similar to Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher.
Of course, that same episode came with a flashback to Echo’s past could have foreshadowed the Kingpin’s new role in Hawkeye and the MCU as a whole, although for now Marvel seems to be shifting the spotlight to someone else. After all, ever since Black Widow came out, it’s been a known fact for a while that Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Val Recruited Yelena Belova for a vengeful mission in Hawkeye.
Judging from one of the videos posted on Marvel’s official YouTube channel, Florence Pugh could be attempting to exact her vengeance on Clint Barton very soon because in a brief glimpse the new footage shows what could be Yelena Belova’s first appearance in Hawkeye. For those unfamiliar with the character’s appearance in Marvel comics, Yelena is in all likelihood the character masked behind the Splinter Cell-like night vision goggles which reference one of her costumes in the Thunderbolts’ storyline.
In this brief teaser it’s clear Kate Bishop is just as shocked as anyone else to run into the Black Widow’s sister, and though the goggles used by this Yelena may hide her face, unlike their comic book counterpart, many fans were quick to notice this new Hawkeye easter egg. With only three episodes left, Yelena doesn’t have that much time to make an impact so it’s also a bit of a mystery how long she’ll stick around.
Seeing Natasha Romanoff’s best friend being blamed for her death was perhaps the biggest shock to have come out of Black Widow, but Hawkeye could finally shed some light onto what exactly the prospective Madame Hydra is planning in the shadows and why exactly she would want Clint out of the picture. Most likely, Clint and Kate will have to fight back against Yelena for a while before convincing her of what really happened in Vormir.
Still, seeing these types of references in series will bode well with those feeling Hawkeye doesn’t do the comics too much justice, due to the darker nature of the latter. So far, Cint and Kate are proving to be an incredible MCU partnership, even if that doesn’t reflect directly on the series’ ratings and streaming numbers, especially due to the recent spike in action that can only go up once Yelena enters the battlefield.
