With online multiplayer and co-op such a focus nowadays, it's always exciting whenever a new local co-op game hits the scene. Luckily, September 2025 has more new local co-op releases than usual, with at least three games launching this month that fit the bill, including the highly-anticipated Borderlands 4. Borderlands 4 may be the headlining new local co-op game for September 2025, but it's not alone.
As usual, Borderlands 4 will support 2-player split-screen and 4-player online co-op throughout the entire game. Borderlands 4 features a brand-new setting to explore in the form of Kairos and features all kinds of exciting new features and gameplay improvements over its predecessors, but it still sticks close to the franchise's established formula. Like previous games in the series, Borderlands 4 has players choosing between four different Vault Hunters, collecting a dizzying number of guns, and looting and shooting their way through seemingly endless hordes of enemies, all the while completing every quest that comes their way. Split-screen co-op will be available in most versions of the game, but Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 will not have split-screen, so fans should keep that in mind.

Borderlands 4 will give local co-op fans their money's worth and then some, but it will be joined by other local co-op offerings in the month of September. A few days after Borderlands 4 hits the scene, LEGO Voyagers will release on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. One of the rare strictly co-op games, LEGO Voyagers has players controlling a 1x1 LEGO brick and working together with their partner to solve puzzles. LEGO Voyagers looks adorable and the fact that it's being built specifically with co-op in mind should do wonders.

While these are the local co-op games releasing in September 2025, there are other games that will feature local multiplayer, even if it's not necessarily "co-op." Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will feature 4-player split-screen for Grand Prix, Race Park, and Time Attack when it releases on September 25, while LEGO Party features Mario Party-style action with a LEGO makeover on September 30. New sports games NBA 2K26, NHL 26, and EA Sports FC 26 will all have local multiplayer options as well when they release on September 5, September 12, and September 26, respectively.
