- Gamble reassured fans that the next Mass Effect will also maintain a mature tone, similar to the original trilogy.
Michael Gamble, the project leader behind the next Mass Effect game, recently reassured concerned fans that the next game will retain the photorealistic art style found in previous entries in contrast to Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Way back in 2020, BioWare confirmed that the dormant Mass Effect series would return with a new mainline entry. Not much is known about the sequel as of this writing, save that it will be set after the events of the original trilogy and feature Shepard’s popular Asari squadmate, Liara T'Soni.
While the gaming world waits for the next Mass Effect, BioWare is revisiting another of their hit RPG franchises with Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which is set to launch on October 31. So far, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is being praised for its plot and character interactions, but there are still a few areas that are seeing a mixed reaction as the game nears its release. One of these is Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s art style, which is seen as more colorful and cartoon-like than the aesthetic found in past installments.
How Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Marketing Could Give Mass Effect 4 Lots to Chew on
Dragon Age: The Veilguard's informative marketing strategy has been informative and alluring, and Mass Effect 4's could follow suit.
Michael Gamble recently addressed the impending launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard on Twitter, stating that while it and the new Mass Effect game he is working on are from the same studio, they are still separate projects with their own unique approaches. In response to this, Twitter user ReaLitY_Siege asked Gamble not to “Pixar” Mass Effect like BioWare supposedly did with Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Gamble replied by saying that he might not agree with this apparent criticism, but his Mass Effect project will maintain a photorealistic art style.
Next Mass Effect Won’t Have Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s “Pixar-like” Art Style
In another post in the same Twitter thread, Gamble stated that the next Mass Effect game will also retain the mature tone of the original Mass Effect trilogy, though he naturally remained tight-lipped on the details. As mentioned before, very little is known about the next Mass Effect game's story at the moment, and the branching narrative of the previous games raises plenty of questions about the state of the Milky Way galaxy following 2012's Mass Effect 3.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is handling past continuity by narrowing the player’s role in the backstory down to three basic choices, and fans are already theorizing that BioWare will take a similar approach in the new Mass Effect. In fact, Dragon Age: The Veilguard could provide a preview for many aspects of the next Mass Effect, but it seems like the art direction isn’t one of them. BioWare fans will get to check out Dragon Age: The Veilguard themselves on October 31 to find out if the style is to their liking.
